I have been trying to brush up & get a bit quicker in my assement of prices for raw Better date Morgans in VF- (just because it is about 70% of the condition I see) I decided to go back to 2nd grade & try Flash Cards to lock it in better -:goof: The dates & Prices correspond with 28 of the better date Morgan dollars in VF condition based upon the Sept. Grey Sheet Bid price- FLASH CARDS I did others but this was my first test - would this be something that anyone would use also or am I nutsdd:
Checked it out. Drove me up the wall in seconds. Course I'm not a Morgan collecor but not my idea of studying anymore. Just a comment - some mght love it.
I would use a relative price rather than an actual price. For exaample, I would take the midrange price and give it a 5. And then figure out the ranges on both sides and give the highest and lowest values 1 to 10. Maybe a $500 coin would be the 10. Maybe for this kind of coin, the lowest score would be a 3 because of the intrinsic value of silver. this way you rank the coins relative to one another but do not put an actual value on the coin. the prices are always changing but the non-monetaryrelative value between coins rarely does. -Ken
There is one field that I am investigating that is overstruck coins. With just one reference book, I have found very interesting overstruck coins, one of them is perhaps excessively rare from what I am seeing at the moment.
If there isn't time to use some sort of price guide, I normally don't buy anything unless it's a obvious screaming bargain.
They have this software out now where you can make a chart. You can print the chart and take it with you to shows. You can even add columns and list prices listed in several price guides so that you can come up with an average. I think it's called...Excel.
I guess alot of you guys dont get it - I have all they Grey ,Blue,Green, Monthly , Quarterly ..... Sheets - the idea is to get the coins in my head where I dont have to refer to the sheets so often- Lets take the price issue out of it - Can you name the 30 or so better date Morgans in any grade ? How about other coins series ? We all know prices change- whoppdie do - its knowing how to pick out the 3 good things out of the peoples 100 other junk coins in order to pay them correctly - Once I pull their good coins THEN I can get out the sheets & pay them the correct amount for it. That is what I am or trying to do - For hecks sake at one point David Hall had memorized the entier set value of 20Th century coins in the highest MS grade- All Im doing is getting my mind sharper- I dont buy as a collector- I guess you have to be in my shoes to understand what I was trying to do -
Wow Budgood, Seems you didn't like any of our answers. Hey, I was just being honest from my point of view. I'm not a Morgan man and I AM a collector I know my 2 Cent Pieces off the top of my head for the most part but don't buy them to sell. This little point was not in your original post by the way. When I go shopping I do brush up on what I'm looking for the old fashioned way. It works for me. If flash cards work for you then GO WITH IT! IT IS A NOVEL APPROACH.
No - its not that I didnt like any of the answers . Everyone has an opinion & it is fine - I was just pointing out why I was doing it & for what. I guess everyone needs thier crutch so to speak - I just dont want to have to be lost if I dont have it. BTW It drives me crazy too but as you said it is a diffenent approach & sometimes getting out of your comfort zone helps - Thanks for your imput.
Bud - are you wanting to get the approx prices in your head or are you trying to get the better date coins in your head ?
