I keep looking at 1942/1 D Mercury dimes on ebay. I have a 42/1 P. In no way would I ever buy one of these. I don't care if it was authenticated by ppsd, aacos, dprc. or any other slab outfit. There just isn't any 1 there. Just a partly doubled 4.. Check this one out. 320089215986
It looks normal to me. Can't believe it went that high though. That is a lot of money! I would have used that to get some proofs. But, it was the bidders choice. Phoenix
On the genuine coins you should se a "nub" of the top and bottom of the 1 at the front of the two. The pictures do not show that. They are also no clear enough to show if there is doubling on the four or if there is what kind of doubling. The 1942 dated coins were notorious for machine doubling of the date. I wouldn't touch that coin for more than $1.20 without much better pictures.
I agree with Condor, the 4 should show doubling, and I assume that is what the arrow is pointing to, also there is a remnant of the one under the 2, or should be. In addition, there should be a definite diagonistic die mark in the field above the date. I doubt that this is the overdate. I have cherried one, and now it is in an NGC slab, marked XF-45. Pass on this one. Oh, for the record, no one 'invented' the 1942/1 D overdate, however, it was discovered by someone.
Sold!!! It looks to me like somebody paid $499.00 for a $1.50 coin. Even if it were real, how could you tell from the pics.
