Who decides what constitutes an error, the mint? They are the ones making everything from the master dies to the hubs and the collars right?
The error collectors can be more precise I am sure, but isn’t an error going to be a manufacturing problem? A variety will be a slight change in the engraving of the coin.
Error-ref.com calls plating blisters errors (Part V, Planchet Error). I think they are a manufacturing defect, not an error…Spark
The mint is the manufacturer and they have set standards, in writing. If they produce a coin outside of those written standards then it’s an error. Varieties are different so don’t get them confused. These are errors:
I think the collector is the one that denotes what is an Error Coin. Mint errors have three categories , Planchet, Die and Striking. A Blank or planchet is considered an error only because it should not have left the mint as a blank. Post 1982 LMC planchets are not made at the mint, so can you still call them Mint Errors when they have a defect? If the clad metal used to make Dimes and Quarters is not made at the mint and it has a defective layer do those coins made with it become Errors only because they should not have left the mint or only because someone can make money by selling them as such? I get to decide what I do and do not collect, I have to use what I understand about the minting process and the mint itself to decide what is what. It is easy to get one put over on you because some people use coin collecting as a money making business. I do not think a Defect and an Error are always the same thing. Some varieties are caused by errors and some are caused by design changes.
In order to decide what it is an Error or Variety, the intervenant must know very well the Minting Process and what was use by periods of time. So mean to understand well the knowleadge of the Error Definition must be well apply. Definition: Any anomaly ocured during the process of fabrication in which Human Intervention was involved. This it is an example of an controversy, In fact 1987 till 2001(Philladelphia) and 2004 (Denver and San Francisco) those blancs was produce outside Mint facility, but in fact will still be consider errors because the reception at the Mint facility has mint personal to verify and also at the subsidary facilities the Mint allways has the personel. 1987 till 2001 respective 2004 was an exception. (for this I can produce the educational materiel) Now back to the question: In fact we have Errors, Varieties and some which the vision to fall in one category or other it is controversy. An example are the Cuds, BIE or Die Cracks. Those in fact are part of the aging Die, an normal course of the components of the machines. IMHO those could be put in an new catergory as very minors indirect varieties. (Just think: if your car brake pads worn. It is an error?? absoluty No) So in conclusion: The answer rest on the knowleadge of the Mint process by periods. I can show here some examples if will be request as per examples the blanking, the Mint chain of production, an very controversy subject as Feeder Fingers which do not exist on the Horizontal Presses, or to explain the some of the wrong emplyed denomination with the hystoric and racins of this like the wrong employ of the term LAM which in our case could be employ only in cladding and plated. But we have to respect also our past aways and our 40 and more years seniors. Silvio
Well gee I don't know of nobody else who's making that stuff. However they just make the errors. We catch them when they do it because they don't know it when they do it otherwise they wouldn't do it, does that make any sense?
