I've been a regular visitor to this site since early November. I have put up quite a few posts and have started a good many threads that have been popular. But I still feel like an outsider. Everybody seems to know everybody else (except me) and everybody seems to know the Moderators. So I would like to see a thread about, and by, he Moderators--who they are, what their backgrounds are, why they are doing this, what they hope to accomplish, etc. I'm familiar with the names SATOOTOKO and GDJMSP, but no others (maybe there are no others). Come on, guys, lay it on us. Who are you and what are you doing? gunsmoke
I dabbled in collecting US coins for many years, starting about 50 years ago, in varying degrees of seriousness. Several years ago I began collecting world coins, concentrating on modern Japanese coinage, including early to mid-20th Century coins of Korea and portions of China under Japanese control. I've built up a library containing most of the English language material about my specialty area, along with some Japanese language material, and other more general literature on world coinage. My only active US collection is a Walking Liberty set in circulated condition, and my US coin library consists solely of a few Red Books, ranging from the 1960's through 2003). I'm semi-retired, so I have a fair amount of free time. I've always been interested in education and spent a number of years teaching at a night law school. When sharing knowledge I feel that I'm just participating in the forum as a member. I've learned a great deal from other members of this and other forums, and found CoinTalk to be an exceptionally friendly place with a lot of mutual assistance, so when I was asked to participate in it's moderation I gladly accepted as one way of "giving back". As a Moderator I believe my functions are To assist in keeping the forum civil and cooperative To help limit spam to an absolute minimum I've seen other forums destroyed by flame wars, and by becoming excessively commercial, so I do tend to be pretty strict in those areas. I'll let the Administrator and the other Moderators speak for themselves.
i,ve been a forum member for almost 2 years and want to give credit where credit is due, it may happen and i don,t read it, but i don,t see the foul language, hateful remarks, i,m better than you, etc on this forum like i see on some of the other coin forums..i think it is because the moderators here don,t allow it..yes we are adults, but being a adult doesn,t mean you have to cuss, be hateful, be better than thou..
Billzach,we are here to talk about coins, but when we do talk about religion & politics,we should always behave like adults in our discussions. You're right about foul language.I hate that. Aidan.
Good Show That was very informative and interesting, SATOOTOKO. Just the kind of stuff I wanted to know. You've had an interesting life and I think you're the right person to be a Moderator. Thanks.--gunsmoke
I read the general discussion forum all the time and can't remember ever seeing any foul language. And I will be the first to admit that at times we have some members that have issues but have never seen those members use foul language in there post. There are times that I disagree with the moderators, I think at times they lock up a post to soon and not let it run it's course. However they have a hard job trying to please everyone and keep a good balance of pros and cons. I strongly support there effort to keep this the best site on the web and I am grateful that we have them, "ALL OF THEM" BRUCE.
Well since Roy jumped in first now I'll post I'm Speedy. --been collecting for around 6+ years---I collect anything and everything that I like--mostly US coins. The main collections are Proof 66 Franklin Halves---I'm down to 2 left to go---1951 and 1952....world coins don't ring my bell that much but I have picked up some when I've seen them and people have bought me some from when they have gone over seas so my world coin collection is in the hundreds. The one thing I've learned is that there is so much to learn----I've also learned that it is best to buy the book before you buy the coin---but other than that I'm just a green-horn! I'm co-owner of a Web Hosting company that started last year in May---I don't know what the Lord has in store for me down the road as I like to do alot of things...I just need to find the right one---I think the biggest job in the world is learning---and I'm out to learn as much as I can. The members here on CoinTalk are more than friends, they are family....ones who I can count on to know and help me when I can't find something that I need to know--each one is special---each in their own way. I've known GDJMSP for as long as I've been collecting---I was a member of CoinWorld Forum (now dead) and I met a good many people---but I have to say that CoinTalk is the best forum of all time! As to what I believe my functions are--- I totaly agree with Roy--- We want to make sure that this forum is a Family Friendly forum. We want to take care of spam posts ASAP I detest any foul language---and there is never a reason to use any. We Moderator aren't something special---we are just members like you---we have to go by the same rules as you---more than anything I think we are just trying to help lift the work load from Peter. Running a forum isn't an easy thing---the work and costly upkeep is something and Peter gets all of the thanks! Thats all---I hope that I answered some of your questions! Speedy
I'm from India and I'm fortunate to get in touch in with this site. The moderators are doing a great job.... And I'm a bit surprised to know that some of them have more than 50 years of experience.
The vast majority of my walkers were taken from circulation (yes, I am that old ), and the others have been purchased at coin shows, except for one that I bought at a coin shop in either Stockholm or Copenhagen (I forget which) while on a Baltic cruise.
Thanks for the reply. Obviously this collection (to complete it) is a long slow process. I'm trying to buy one at a time in as high a grade as I can get. I bought a 1918-S on ebay for $61.00 and I am waiting for it to come in the mail. It seemed like a very nice coin...Item# 230069982888 I would like to get the 1921 P,D&S coins next. But the prices I have seen for the poor beat up specimens are absurd.
The Moderators here are - Peter T Davis - site owner and administrator satootoko Speedy Jody526 and myself GDJMSP - that's all of them. I've posted this info many times, but since we are being asked I'll do so again. I started collecting in 1960, stopped collecting just this year. Until a few years ago my primary interest was in US coins, but then I switched to world coinage. I found the designs and history more appealing and the cost was a fraction of what it was for US coins. I decided that I preferred the study of the coins and the hobby more than the collecting of them and that is what I will stick with, probably until I can no longer do so. My goals at this point are to learn as much as I can about the areas that interest me the most and to share that knowledge with others - and also to encourage all others to share their knowledge. There is so much to learn about this hobby that one person cannot possibly learn it all and that is why sharing is so important. Without it, most of us would still be stumbling around blindly believing bad information, paying way too much or selling way too cheaply. And we would miss out on the camaraderie, friendship and enjoyment that comes from sharing with others.
