Good morning ma numismaticical friend! Last night I found my old Whitman's lincoln memorial cent book and it's almost complete HOWEVER after digging relentlessly through all the "change jars" at my abode I realized that I just can't seem to run across any S mint marks anywhere? I live in N.E. Pennsylvania so wrong coast I guess but is there any practical way to fill these gaps? edited
PM me with your address and I'll mail you them. Except for the '61-S. You can stop looking for that one. It doesn't exist. Lance.
It was a 1961 D now that I look at it. my eyes arent what they used to be I guess.. Wow THANK YOU VRY MUCH!! That was my first little book that my grandfather and I started working on and I always wanted to finish it. If I can get anything you need/want please let me know. -Jeff
The San Fran mintages for those years are the lowest of the series. So it makes sense that those aren't turning up for you. Plus since they are the lowest they are the ones most likely to be held onto by collectors for the value??? A lot of the early San Fran Memorial cents were made in quantities of under a billion! The 68s is the rarest of the series at a 1/4 billion. there are several mintages of the wheat cent that had more made than the 68-S, not that you are likely to find a 1919 or 1918 before a 68-S in change, but maybe.. Awesome hook up Lance!
that is awesome info. I actually was just looking at that Lincoln Cent website and seen about some of the key dates! I just recently found a 1917 wheat cent in change. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a 1909 D VDB?
Nope, that would be almost as cool as a 1909-O VDB... Neither Denver nor New Orleans minted cents in 1909. Very cool sending those S-mint Lincolns, Lance! I'm in SoCal so I see the S-Mint Lincolns in change much more than when I lived in Illinois. But hardly ever see them in RD or even RB condition.
I did not know that about mintages, EEW. Interesting. I have a roll or two of memorial cents from each Mint from '59 through the mid '70's. A few uncirculated. But I pay no attention to them. Some day I'll sort through them and see if there are any interesting varieties. Lance.
They're rarer dates. I have the rarest one, the 68 S as my old avatar and my new avatar (same coin) It's one of my favorite coins.
1968-S -258,270,001 that is low mintage. and just finished the rest of that books up to '97 (the blank extra holes) and then got almost all to date! except for 6 D mints but all of those should be relatively easy to get in pocket change though. Now I'm bent on finishing my lincoln cents! Got all the P mints from the memorial issues! The shield cents are all gotten too with the exception of the S's. I read that the new shield cents is to be the new permenant Reverse on these. Also the Obverse has been re touched to more closely resemble Victor D. Brenners original design. here is the link: Lincoln Shield Cents
That's is great going Lance. This is what makes CoinTalk great. EEW, For me 1919's and 1918's have been very common. But almost all are in just VG condition with a few in Fine. It's the D and S mints that are difficult to find when roll searching along with anything in else in the TEEN's and 20's.
whats RD & RB condition mean? ok with the ones from lkeigwin and all my searching combined, I finally have a complete set of lincoln memorial cents! Hooray!! XD
They are descriptions of the color of the coin. Copper coins are originally red (RD) when they come from the mint but overtime they typically oxidize and become red-brown (RB) and then brown (BN). This occurs even if there is no wear on the coin. So, coins are considered more desirable when they are red than when they are red-brown...which is more desirable than brown.
Just thought I'd update this thread a bit. I bought all new whitman penny books and am proud to say that I have them just about all finished with a few common ones in the later wheat cent book and in the '09-'41 the real only exceptions of 1909 S & SVDB, 1914D, 1922 no D, 1926S, and of course the coveted 1931S But I don't feel bad about not having those. I had a blast filling them up! Think I'll start a new album on liberty head nickles, Buffalo Nickles and Indian head cents. Wish me luck! -Jeff
