Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone has read the Guide book to US type sets (something like that) published by Whitman. I have become interested in putting together a 20th Century Type set collection and was wondering if this book would be valuable in my quest? While I'm here, does anyone have any tips on starting a type set collection? Thanks Jim
I have the book. Like the others in the series it is fairly basic but packs a lot of good info into one booki. For the price ($19.95) I think the book is verhy worthwhile.
i dont have the book, but I've read it at the local book store, and It is overall a pretty good book. As for tips on a type set. I've been working on one for about a year, and I still have some of the tougher coins to pick up. My best recommendation for a type set, is to save up and buy the more expensive coins first, that way after you have all the tough ones, it will be easy and cheap to get the cheap ones. Good Luck with your set! monkeyman
Thanks for the tips so far guys! Hey Monkeyman, thanks for the encouraging words. what do you suggest I try to pick up for my first few coins? Jim
hmm, one thing what are you basing your type set on? If you dont know yet, here is my recommendation, and what i am using http://cgi.ebay.com/Dansco-7070-United-State-Type-Set-Album_W0QQitemZ270205422486QQcmdZViewItem?IMSfp=TL0801211051a30933 I would try to pick up both of the liberty seated dollars. Those are VERY pricey, and getting them out of the way early would be awesome. Then move on to the liberty seated 20 cent piece. After that, work on the early copper; large cents and half cents. monkeyman
Hey monkeyman, thanks again for the informative post! What exactly do you mean when you say what am i basing my type set on?? I was just going to collect one of each design for every denomination since 1900. Am I way off here? Thanks again man, good luck on your collection as well! Jim
Ooo, so you are JUST doing 20th century, Im doing the dasco 7070, which is basically 19th, 20th, and a little bit of 21st century coins all put together. But if you just want to do 20th century, then go for it! monkeyman
Yea Im just a beginner man, wanna take it slow! Im impressed man that your going all the way, thats pretty sweet!! What exactly did you mean by what am I basing my type set on? I didnt really understand, just wanna know if I'm supposed to have more coins of one denomination or something to make it a true type set? Also, what grades are you shooting for when making your type set? The Dansco 7070 is for all coins I take it? Is there a Dansco album for 20th Cent. type set? Sorry for all the questions, Im just looking forward to starting this up! Thanks again man Jim
im still a beginner too, actually, im only a freshman in highschool for my type set, for the more modern coins, Im (1950-) trying to get all proofs, 1900-1949 uncirculated. anything before that... whatever i can afford. what i mean by "what are you basing your type set on?" is for example, I am basing my set on the dansco 7070. So I was asking what you are basing your set on. Here are some ideas for a 20th century type set... this is a list of what they believe is a 20th century type set, you can go by this, or just make your own set. http://www.coinresource.com/guide/20th_century_type_set_list.htm here's another way, i think this would look cool hanging up on the wall http://www.jakesmp.net/CSD_Type_set_holders/EM_20th_Century_M.html monkeyman
Jim, Are you an ANA member? If you are you can request a DVD from their library entitled 'How To Collect US Type Coins'. I don't know anything about the DVD but it could be helpful in your quest and all it will cost you is postage both ways.
I also found a book the ANA sells titled 'Assembling the Ideal 20th-Century Type Set' for $2.50. It is a collection of articles from the Numismatist.
I think whitman has a 20th century coin folder. What you should do first is a 1965-1998 type set, which should get from circulation, then add the circulating commems. I'm afraid you'll have to by the Ikes, but that's life. I found a bicentennial quarter just a couple of weeks ago, and bicentennial halves are useually found in JFK rolls. The first ten state quarters are easy to get too. Better yet, limit yourself to your favorite state quarter, only, and one L&C nickel and save a ton of money. (FIFTY-SEVEN quarters and six nickels, not to mention the new commem pennies-Jeez!) If you want to do proofs, get the 1958 and 1969 proof sets, which will pretty much do everthing from 1948-98.
Thanks everyone for your advice!! Wow, so much to think about I guess. I like the idea of doing proofs from 1950 on, and just cracking them out of proof sets. Thats genius! I was thinking about putting them in a nice Dansco type album, i was thinking the Dansco 7000 might be ok, I dunno though?? Im definitely doing only 1 State Quarter and 2 Nickels I have to sit down this weekend and figure out which coins I need as I dont knwo off the top of my head every type since 1900. This is gonna be interesting! Thanks for the replies everyone, keep em coming.... I feel so lost sometimes! Jim
Hey Eric, Why do you suggest both proof sets, seems like the only difference is the 1/2 dollar and the wheat cent?? Thanks Jim
the quarter and dime are both silver in the '58 set and clad in the '69. That leaves only the nickel, and you can sell the 69s nickel. That's over half the century, and the pennies from 1909 and the nickels from 1938. The proof walkers, buffaloes and Mercuries are expensive, and standing liberties almost nonexistant.
Eric, thanks for the clarification! I actually have a proof set from 1981, would that replace the 69 set?? Also, would the Dansco 7000 album be suitable for this collection? Jim
If your going for the 20th Century Type set I suggest you start out slowly. Go for the common ones first. The reason I say this I've known to many people that start out with a type set and loose interest after a while and it then sits forever. They usually end up speciallizing with certain denomination type of coins. May not be you but start out slowly just in case.
Yea Im definitely gonna start out slowly and get the commons first, thats for sure. Thanks for the advice. I found a book for the 20th Century type set!!! Whitman #9139, looks like a good one! Im gonna order it up tonight! Jim
