I bought a few Whitman folders for my Jefferson nickles and Buffalo nickles. The ports are too small. After trying to push the coins into the slots with all my weight behind it, they just won't go in. I think this is due to quality control issues and the fact that they're made in China these days. I also bought a couple of Lincoln Cent and Roosevelt Dime folders, and they are fine. It takes some pressure to get the coins seated, but your thumbs aren't numb and sore after 10 minutes. I got these mail order from a discount house on the web. I'm not going to get my money back from them, I know. The $2.75 apiece isn't going to break me, but I'm nervous now about buying these same folders from a different supplier. If it is a quality problem I could end up with more junk. Anyone else have problems with these Whitman folders?
I went through the same thing brother.... so I saved up and went for Dansco Albums. They are not the cheapest but they are not only beautiful but even more protective. Of course I use this for very expensive raw coins in Gem conditions and toned. I don't really collect certified unless it really catches my eye. I have bought many albums from this seller and he sells a lot and has good deals IMO. http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Vernon-...subZ2QQ_sidZ833939QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322
I have decent luck pushing coins in on a fluffy towell on a hard flat surface. Another thing you can do, is take a non collectible coin and push it in every slot to make it the right size.
I'm with the Dansco guys. They cost 10x the paper albums but they are sturdy, look nice on a book shelf, easy to access/swap coins and you can see them from both sides.
I have a couple of those albums where you can see both sides. They are very nice for a collection of nice coins. The nickels I have are from when I was a kid. They have more sentimental value than anything else, and I got the Whitman folders to replace the old Whitman folders I had them in for decades. Those old folders are so worn out the coins just fall out when you move them around. Otherwise I would go for the better albums. Believe me, I tried pushing firmly from every angle and on a flat surface. The holes are just too small. Even though they're not worth much I draw the line at using a hammer like the little girl wanted to do! Maybe I'll try Littleton. It looks like it was a mistake to order all the ones I needed at once from the same supplier. It's just strange because the ones for the dimes and pennies are fine.
I bought 32 of the state quarter albums, 16 of each volume, some of them fit nice and snug, some would not go no matter what force you used, I found if i scratched the hole a little bit they would fit, I think there were about 8 or 9 that I had to do that with, it probably is an issue with wear on the dies cutting the holes, the ones that were too tight were cut at more of an angle,
Yeah, I had a problem with the '2nd' State Quarters folders I bought (all 6 of them). My thumbs were really sore after dealing with them. I ended up taking a non-collectible coin and 'reaming' out the edge and then the coins would fit in with no problem.
