I'm just curious as to what everyone's preference is regarding grading services. I prefer NGC for old coins, and PCGS for moderns. It's just my personal preference. I own a 1977-S Quarter graded by ICG PR70DCAM.
Well for moderns I think ICG is the pits---now I really liked the old ANACS but since they have changed it seems like their grading has changed too---for the bad. I really like NGC and they are my pick for anything---nowit has been pointed out many many times on this forum that PCGS grades less PF or MS 70's than NGC---and to some that means that PCGS is harder---not to me but that is just MHO....take it for what its worth. I wouldn't want any of them, because the price is to high Hwy speedy, what do you think is wrong with the ANACS grading right now? if you want put your comments in my TPG thread: http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=18401
I have never purchased a slabbed coin before, but I have read and studied a lot of material about TGP and think that PCGS is the best. Just my opinion.
NO one like ICG it seems? i thought they where respected? Although a bit costly. I jst filled out a 14 coin submission form for them but mostly becuase they offered me a 5 for 5 deal. I sorta always liked there slabs. IMO there in the top 4 for a reason. But I will addmit i voted pcgs. lol
What makes a TPG the best? I say it is their reputation along with their ability to be backed by the general public. If you look at any trading records PCGS gets the big bucks for the same grade as the other TPG mentioned here.
For modern coins, I believe that PCGS is overly tight and NGC is a little better. For example, PCGS rarely grades uncirculated ASE's as 70 because they are worried the coins may later develop milk spots and they (PCGS) will have to pay out or buy the coin back. So, many coins in 69 holders are actually perfect 70's. NGC seems to have no problem handing out 70's when the coins deserve the grade. I chose PCGS only because the market value of a PCGS 70 is higher than that of an ANACS/ NGC/ ICG 70.
I have a 1977-S proof quarter and it is raw just the way I like them. I don't care if someone would call it 65, 66, 67, 68 69, 70, or even 71. It's mine, I like it and I'm satified.
I saw hsn selling ICG graded 70 silver eagle sets for $500 . while coin country was selling NGC in the same grade sets for around 7K . Even the one i bought my buffalos from (not from any of these insane tv show) has them for almost 5K in the NGC label. I am very new and the buffalos were the first major , certified coin i have ever bought. I can see why many in the hobby do not really care for slabed, graded or certified coins. just my uninformed opion
How about - unless your are that Jules person (can not remember the name and I was just looking at some auctions last week). I saw several of the large cents from this collection and would question the grading. Of course all of them make mistakes and I see fewer in NGC and PCGS slabs than ANACs and ICG. But alas we were asked for preferences and not how to rank them - so I selected PCGS just because I seem to see fewer questionable grades in what I like to collect. Granted I am very limited and I will probably (eventually) try to learn other coins, but not for now.
Well Mark I gotta say that when it comes to big name collections, PCGS and NGC both tend to overgrade. But, as a general rule NGC is much more consistent and accurate with their grades than PCGS is or ever was. But that is strictly my unbiased opinion, of course there are plenty of others who share it with me
I guess I haven't seen enough of them by PCGS. No worry though - I still do my best to grade a coin and not look at the holder. As long as the coin makes me happy the slab or holder does not matter. I just about spend all my free time looking at coins - comparing to the ANA Grading book, prices and stuff before I bid. This is hard work to learn. Dang the ANACS large cent I just won off heritage took me a week to decide to bid on it.
Ya know I really found out today that I look at way toooo many coins----I was looking on Ebay and saw a quarter and thought I've seen that quarter before when it sold on Heritage--I went to Heritage and sure enough found it where it had sold in FEB---the ANACS # is the same and the coin is the very same---the toning on it is really cool but I think they over graded it by 1 point---they have AU58 and I wouldn't go over 55.
