I'm doing a high end franklin set. It's a good one, they arn't crazy exspensive, yet they are hard to be able to find in a really nice condition.

Nope - I think a IHC collection. Or anything old and copper. Just my opinion.

Why limit yourself to one or the other? Do both, that way when you catch a deal on one and not the other at a show/shop/flea market or what have you, you can add to a collection!

Thats the best suggestion so far because its what I do. Dont limit yourself to collecting one set or series at a time. I have probably 18 different sets on the go right now. This way, if I see somthing I need for a good deal I can buy it. This makes your buying and your choices more flexible. Everyone collects differently so if you want to be happy with your collection, do it your way, although a full set of BU Frankies is a beautiful sight.

Agree.....Short set Mercs, Walkers, Mint set Morgans etc, so many nice collections to do, why limit yourself, grab them bargains as they come your way !!

A complete date and mintmark collection of Roman Imperial coins! It really only took the British Museum 300 yeras to complete... :-D

But seriously, large cents are a good choice - low mintages and lower survival rates.

I agree with what a few others have said here...work on several at once. I've been collecting for 20+ years, and only have two complete sets to show for it. But, I have about 35 sets started, and just collect when I find a deal. Sort of a hodge-podge, collect it all sort of thing. Thats fun for me, maybe not for you. If I had to choose from your list, I'd go with the Franklins. Fun set to build.

I say do the walkers. They're one of the most attractive coins in the entire US series (IMHO) and they still look great in lower conditions.

Well sure you can pretend to be a coin collector and do a set of Franklins. They will be all shiny and will look nice in your dansco album but don't waste the money.

You can't really call yourself a coin collector until you have addressed the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Yes, I'm talking about the holy grail. Most coin enthusists shudder at the mention of the name ...but you don't. You have something to prove. You have to show all of the Internet wannabes that you are the real deal. You are not some Internet poseur hiding behind the monitor at all hours of the day.

No, you are for real...an honest to goodness coin collector.

The only way that you can claim that title is to tackle the beast....yes, I mean the Mt. Everest of the hobby. The 7070.

Be a man ..step up and show the Nancy boys down at the coin club that you are for real.

    God speed ..you numistmatist ...you.

Of the two choices I would have to go for the Franklins, But along the way I would pick up a few coins that catch your eye.
Peronally I get destracted to easy. I am working on my morgan set, but along the way I have stoped to pick up some BU Franklins, then some pre-64 mint sets, then some seated dimes, now I'm on the hunt for 3 cent nickels. ................uh what was the question??
Oh yea, walkers or franklins. I think that the lower grade walkers lose a lot of appeal, and the Fanklins can be had in upper grades for not a lot of cash, which leaves room for wandering into other sets.;)

well I have already shifted most focus on the walkers and slowing will upgrade it as i go. I just picked up a decent 38 D at the dealer.

I will have a slow franklin set going due to them probably being available in the future in those same high grades and little prices.

Work on a nice medium grade set of Barber dimes, quarters or half dollars.
Each is due to increase in value.

Naturally most will say what they would do or are doing. So I'll say what I'm doing and it's basically what someone already said. Don't waste time and effort with just one type, date, condition, etc. Just start collecting coins. I do that. I started by buying Whitman folders of almost everything. From bank rolls, bags and just change I started to fill most of them. This means buying more of them but after a while, whitman came out with Albums instead of folders so I started buying them. As one filled I started another set. I now have 97 Albums and most complete. Just started the 9th Mercury Dime album and almost filled it with duplicates in my 2x2 piles. Missing only the 42/41 and 42D/41.
The advantage of doing this is as already noted. You can add whatever you acquire, whenever you acquire and from anywhere you acquire a coin. That way you don't go nuts looking for just one or two coins and as a set completes you feel a lot better.

Everyone has been saying about the same thing. The funny thing is that it is okay to start with one type/goal. You will inevitably branch out as you see types you are really drawn to. I started with Kennedy Halves and in the last two months I've focused on War Nickels and Pre-64 proof sets to collect the Franklin's (and all that comes with them.:) I will get back to the Kennedy halves as time goes on.

    Good Luck

You work on the 7070 type set when you can't find anything else that you are looking for.
