That question comes to my mind every time I want to start a new series. I always look at a few for consideration then pick out the one that interests me the most. Thats exactly what you should do. People may have their recommendations for you as what they feel is the best to collect right now but the decision is ultimately up to you....what do you like?

if it were ME, I would go with a high grade NGC type set, nice type is never a bad idea.......

I think it depends upon your goal for collecting (~ the hunt, the acquisition, or the speculation) in combination with your budget and timelines.

Go for Barber dimes, quarters or half dollars.
As everyone probably knows, I am prejudiced.

As with all things in Life...we have choices! Our budget is the primary limiting factor on those choices.
The items that you listed are and can be expensive...better research what really matters to you and your future goals and buy based on what you want to accomplish!

If I had it to do all over again, I would have bought IBM, Microsoft and high dividend paying stocks all those years ago! I would now be able to buy what I wanted;)

    Good luck in your choives!

You gotta get your priorities straight. EVERYONE knows you do the 2 Cent Piece series in business strike before you go messing with those silly Barbers.

Hmmm......well maybe I'm a bit prejudiced as well.

Seriously though do what others advise and that advice is collect what YOU want. I have only completed one set in my lifetime and I think you can guess what that is. That's just me.

Figure out what you like and if that takes years buy things that you like at the moment as you go along. If nothing else it adds variety too your collection.

Whatever appeals to you man, IMO. I'd recomend the Lincoln cent series, not because it is "supposed" to go up in value in 2009, but it is a fun series to put together. I'm having a blast. Another cool series is the Jefferson nickel series. You can almost put together a full set from circulation, some actually have too. Just some suggestions, but go with what you like. :thumb:

This is a decision you have to make for yourself. I can't tell you what kind of women you should date. My taste in women may not be the same as yours. My preferences in coins may not match yours.

You should pick a series that interests you. That may be IH cents, Liberty nickels or Walkers. A set of silver coins with 'Arrows By Date' (see 1853) would be nice. Early silver commemoratives are very interesting. What about a date set 100 years before you were born?

Or you may not collect a series at all. You may decide to collect coins by type. Maybe a nice type set of Seated Liberty Half Dimes through Dollars. Or a cool set of cent types - Large Cents through Lincoln. A type set of obsolete denominations - Half Cent, Two Cent, Three Cent Silver, Three Cent Nickel, Half Dime and Twenty Cent. Or a collection of branch mint coins (good luck with Charlotte and Dahlonega).

Have you considered collecting errors? I know of a guy putting together a set of broadstruck State Quarters. That will be a cool collection.

Bottom line - we can't tell you what you should collect. Do some reading about coins or mint history and sure you'll find something that strikes your fancy.

Barber was the last name of the designer. Liberty does look like a barber on those, come to think of it!

I'm one to talk - some of my emperors look like space-aliens.

I would choose doing the type set or the other option, as I view both the Pandas and plat to be investing in precious metal and not so much collecting coins. I imagine doing a quality type set where each piece was selected with purpose would be very interesting, challenging and rewarding.

i agree with phoenix. if you are looking to start a set start small and build your way up. i'd go for the jefferson nickels. go buy yourself a folder for jefferson nickels and go buy some rolls of nickels at the bank. if you can't find a certian date like the 1950D, just ask around.
