Which is the best option to start a Dansco Album on a Seated Coin?

Honestly, I don't even know what to do in this vast world of collecting... I've gone from a Mercury short set in 66 FB to a 1917 T1 SLQ grading set to a Dansco with Seated Coins. Wow, this world is so huge.

How about I just do all of them? :angelic:

What grades are you looking for? Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the dime and quarter date and mint mark sets are very expensive. I voted halves, not that a set of those would be easy either.

Half Dimes are probably the best bet for me. Relatively cheap set. (Not to mention the Dansco holds every half dime date ever!)

I have a half dime as a type coin, but I have to break out the loupe when I want to look at it.

Great coins! I would go with a larger coins for eye appeal. my vote is quarter dollars or halves. I have been working on all of these myself for a year or two now. from half dime to dollars... but what a challenge. I have not even completed the series types yet. 6 different types of one denomination is a challenge in itself for me. have fun with it, good hunting there. Gobrecht!

Half dime us about the only achievable in the seated series unless you have unlimited funds and years of patience for the others with exception of the half dollar you should be able to get close to complete

Ok, all 4 ranked in order of difficulty:
1- Quarter (literally every other coin is a key date)
    2- Half Dollar (later dates)
3- Dime (a few keys here and there)
4- Half Dime (pretty easy, undervalued set)

All that matters is what you can afford, and with all due respect, I doubt a complete set is remotely achievable in the foreseeable future no matter your choice. At this point, Omega, you'd be wise to simply decide what it is that truly interests you, stop skipping all over the map with what you want to do, and focus your attention on it. While there's nothing wrong with thinking you'd like to do this or that, if your goal is actually collecting, sooner or later you're going to need to start buying these coins, and little is more foolish than to purchase only to immediately lose interest and want something else.

Personally, I would forget the Dansco as unless you have nearly unlimited resources there will always be empty holes that will bug you. Why not pick a series and collect each of the major types in the series in similar grades? Quarters or halves would be fun and you wouldn't have to break the bank.

I agree 100% with this. It doesn't matter what you collect, as long as you enjoy it, and as long as you're only using discretionary income to fund it, IMO. 99.9% of us on here don't have the resources of an Eliasberg, a Pittman, or a Garrett, so, putting together collections of that calibre is just a pipe dream for us. For some of us, putting together a complete set of just about anything would be a serious challenge to the budget.

Repeat after me: IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER.

There are nearly infinitely many ways to have fun with numismatics. I prefer type collecting. There's the OCFEC ("one coin from every country") world collection that's really fun and affordable. You can do short sets. You can do date sets and ignore mint marks. You can do Morgans by VAM, bust halves by Overton number, large cents by Sheldon number, etc. It all doesn't matter, as long as you enjoy it.

To directly answer your question, I, personally would go for halves, but that's because I like big silver, and there's the 1861-O out there that you can still potentially cherry pick a CSA or LA state piece.

My personal pick for an undervalued and fun set would be Liberty nickels in MS63-64, or Indian quarter eagles in MS62.

If I had to pick one I would pick dimes, they have managed to become my favorite in the series and I enjoy the different varieties they have.

However I would suggest doing none as a full date set, like Paul I gravitate towards type collecting for US coins. I would suggest that you make your own set instead of trying to do down the complete set rabbit hole and hitting show stoppers or losing interest.

A set that have tentatively started for myself with seated material is just a type set of all of them motto/no motto/arrows ect. Like a 7070 of seated material if you will though I have been more inclusive in what I would like to be represented. Something like this though gives you the freedom to do it however you feel like and to add anything you want to the set even if it is just because you really liked it.

I would love to see your progress on that! Are you going to put them in a custom holder/album, too?

I like my coins slabbed, my cat prefers them raw lol. I do keep all my set coins graded for protection and liquidity since I never know what the future will hold.

I wish I had gotten further on the set so far but I really have just kind of turned my collecting into the like it set. If I like it I will buy it and make something up for it to fit into. I did just lose a bunch of coins from my type set registry not to long ago from getting varieties attributed to my seated material which was one of the things that made me think "why do I actually care". I will just make my own set and enjoy it.

I also wish I knew how to post pictures here but I have Trueviews on them on the PCGS site.

A couple of my favorites in the set
    PCGS Cert 33897999 1838-O 10C F101
    PCGS Cert 33868000 1873-S 10C F101
    PCGS Cert 29765723 1874-S 50C
    PCGS Cert 27783826 1860-O $1

I've been all over the map the past few months, too. My most recent acquisitions include 4 2nd century Roman denarii, an early Thasos tetradrachm (ca. 148 BC), 3 advertising tokens, a monster toned/raw silver 1912 Canada 5 cents, a super monster toned 2000 ASE, a PCGS MS65 1986-P quarter with TrueView, a Pan Pac bronze medal/so-called dollar (HK400), and a toned 1921 Morgan. Tell me what set those all fit into, huh? :p

The "I because I can" set. You wanted so you did lol. When in doubt with world coins just buy World War dates and call it a war set . I'm right there with you Australian sovereigns have been sneaking into my collecting and inviting their friends.

Honestly collecting is so much more fun and freeing imo when we just buy stuff because we like it. Nothing bored me faster than trying to do complete runs of the same series.
