Which of the US Gold Coins have wording around the edges??? What is that called??? I saw one on a webpage a few months ago and thought it was pretty cool, but now I can't find anything like it... Also, I read that there is a possibility of a new coin comming out like this... Any idea on how the wording is actually put in the sides??? I've got a pretty good visualization of how regular coins are minted, but no idea how they do the sides on these?
Its called "Edge-incused" or " lettered edge". I believe $20 Saints had lettered edges. Lots of other countries use it and the new President dollar coins will have the Mottos and dates edge-incused.
I believe that all of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles had edge lettering. Some other coins such as some early cents and bust half dollars had it too. At first, the mint did it with a Castaing machine. I found a couple of pictures of the machines here (scroll down a page or two). You can probably do a google search for that term and see more pictures and diagrams of the machine. They later used closed collar dies I believe.
Here is probably more then you ever wanted to know about both the Castaing method, and the three-part collars used for the $20 St. Gaudens. I don't think the Mint has announced yet how they will handle the Dead at Least 2 Years President" series.
Bumping this to make it easier to find, lol. This is interesting at helps explain how my half could have got the error on the edge, see that thread in US Coins.
