Close call for me, but I'm gonna go Walking Liberty, love both sides of the coin, great artistry on the front and a very distinct eagle design on the back, all the 1916 coins have great eye appeal though
I really don't like most of Barbers designs at all, especially the Barber dime etc, except for some of his patterns which were great. From your list I'll go with the Seated series. It has some kind of massive appeal for me seeing Liberty, seated. Lol
For World coins overall, it's really hard to say. There's so much to choose from. For US coins, it's the Pan-Pac octagonal $50, hands down. dwhiz- I like the Flying Eagles, too. And anything Draped Bust.
Oh, owls are the BEST. I don't have many owl coins (and still haven't acquired an Athenian "Owl" tetradrachm because my taste in those outruns my budget), but I do have some hobo carvings of owls on modern coins. (Or rather I did have. I still have the cent, but somebody else wanted the quarter pretty badly and threw enough money at me that I finally relented. Miss it, but I'll find another.)
At one show, an indulgent dealer gave me the opportunity to hold a raw AU octagonal in my hot little hand, and feel the heft of the thing. It was a thrilling twenty seconds. Fortunately the coin was in a flip, which kept all my drool off of it.
I remember when you could buy the whole set in the original frame for about $20,000. yep I'm that old.
If memory serves (this was at one of the FUN shows in the early 2000s), the same dealer (or one at a nearby table) also let me hold a certified MS67 BN Chain cent. I get the quivers just thinking about that.
(PS- OK, so maybe my memory doesn't serve so well, since I just researched my own claim, and don't see any MS67 BN Chain cents in the PCGS/NGC populations. But it was in an NGC holder, in some astronomical grade. One of the top pops, obviously. Maybe 66 BN?)
I have no one favorite design, I have about 8 and I can't pick the one I like the best as they are all great looking coins.
My answer is none of the options listed by the OP or "other". The question would have been better left open ended since it should be apparent that Barber and Liberty Seated coinage aren't in the running as a favorite. Many US collectors would only choose either because the response by default will be US centric and the overwhelming percentage aren't familiar with many designs from elsewhere. As for me, my favorite is the Spanish colonial pillar which is what I now primarily collect, though I acknowledge there are others which are better artistically. Within US, Draped Bust portrait for circulating coins and probably the US Assay Office $10/$20 and $50 overall.
Spanish colonial pillar can fall under other , I should have stated US coins, did what I could with a max of 10 options though
There's the Mickley-Crosby SP67 (the one they call "The Coin"), but 66 is the highest MS grade one has achieved. I couldn't list one "favorite" design, or even one favorite US issue. The SLQ and WLH would be in the top tier, and honestly the ASE deserves a spot too. It enrages me to think the Mint can produce such a fabulous design and then inflict dreck on us for everything else they do. The Heraldic Draped Bust belongs in the conversation, and anyone who doesn't include the Pan-Pac $50 is broken. There are half a dozen different Thalers which easily qualify, as well as much of Britain's 19th Century issue (I'm weak for the Gothic Crown too, Longnine009). Mexico's 1921 Dos Pesos - if you can find a good strike - is the equal of any of the above. You get the idea. I'm gonna stop typing.
Point taken. I am aware this is a matter of individual preference. One point I was trying to convey though is that the designs in the list are only popular or even liked by US collectors, not anyone else. There just happen to be more of them, possibly more than all other countries combined. The designs considered best among US coins such as the WLH, SLQ or even Saints aren't on anyone else's radar. I happen to like them more than collectors from elsewhere but its because I still have bias (and I don't mean this negatively) toward US coinage because I used to collect it and did so at an early age. I like most of them, though not as much as in the past.
This beautiful piece is a favorite of mine, along with the spanish pillar dollar, and is certainly one of the best that portrays a real person.
The Pan-Pac Octagonal $50 is my favorite as well, but since it wasn't on the list in the OP, I voted for the SLQ which I like marginally better than the WLH and Saints.
The poll choices are too US centric. I guess world and ancient coin collectors don't count? The most iconic design of of all times...borrowed and used by different empires, kingdoms and city states throughout Europe and Asia for 300 years as a global currency of trade....the Alexander III (The Great) tetradrachm. As ancient Greek as mine looks, it was actually minted in ancient Babylon...1000 miles from the heartland of Greece. That says a lot about the recognition, iconic status, and acceptance of these coins in the ancient world.
