Okay...so I picked this coin up today at a LCS. Bought it because I liked the grade for the price (about 2x melt value.) Got it home...and it's definitely a DDO, maybe more. Problem is...I can't seem to match it to one. I'm wondering if anyone can help me match it to a CONECA DDO... Here is the entire coin (obverse and reverse) The designer's initials (clearly doubled) The ribbon (clearly doubled) And LIBERTY - note the tripling on the upper horizontal bar of the L
Here are the diagnostics I can see: Obverse Die crack along forehead into upper hair Die scratch NW to NE under the 4 in the date Die crack along the base of the bust 3 or 4 parallel die scratches horizontally on the ribbon Vertical die scratch across the back of Washington's lips (right side) Two very light die scratches from the lower R to the base of the T Light die scratch from the base of the I to the base of the B Two small die dots under the Y Two small die dots to the right of the I Two parallel die scratches running NE from the lower right serif of the E One die scratch running E from the middle serif of the E Reverse Die crack running down the entire length eagle's right wing (viewer's left) Another die crack running from the fields to the left of the eagle's right wing, through the wing, then about halfway to the Q Die crack running through US to the eagle's left wing (viewer's right) under A
I am thinking some possible candidates from the CONECA listings are: DDO-001 DDO-007 DDO-008 DDO-018 DDO-023 I'll stop talking now and listen. Thanks!
It's a Nikon D600 with a Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro lens mounted on a copy stand. For the closeups I'm literally holding my 10x Belomo loupe about a half inch over the coin.
your micro lens wont do it??? is there a camera I can buy for like 100 buck to get the same effect?? that wont cost me an arm n a leg??
I'm sure there are plenty of options for you, as long as it has a macro function and a small minimum focusing distance. I think this question gets asked at least once a week in every coin forum I'm a member of (not trying to be rude at all, I'm just saying that there are plenty of threads on this exact subject.)
Thanks Larry - I appreciate it. I think I looked hard at the DDO-018, but a couple of the die markers weren't exactly the same, so I couldn't be sure.
