I need a raw 1909S Lincoln for my little collection, and I'd prefer a toned coin. I found these two, both are over priced/graded in my opinion at VF, I think they are are F, what are your thoughts?

The 2nd one looks a little polished (obv) to me...

I like the wood grain a hair better on the second one, but there is something about it that pushes me away from it. I think it is the marks on the N on the ONE on the reverse.

Both coins are solid VF. Look at the separation between the cheek and jaw. Also the reverse wheat lines and grains look good. I must say, I have some reservations about the authenticity of the top coin, the S position is suspect. I seriously hope you're not buying this key date raw from ebay.

I, of course haven't bought anything, but both are raw and from ebay and I do favor the first coin. I did come to the experts first :) I've checked the PCGS guide and I 'think' both are genuine but I know there are others who have much more experience then me here.

They are VF, I agree with Thad. The position of both mint marks seem a little slanted and towards the rim to me. Maybe the tilt of the coin, but I would want to look carefully for added mintmark. If return policy is solid, and price is good, might be worth a try IF you trust yourself in looking for work around the mm. Otherwise, I would pass.

If the coins are truely VF, and geniune, then the price isn't horrible, with a slight premium for the wood grain toning. I guess I better pull out my Lincoln book and do a bit more research on the mint marks, and maybe ask for a closeup photo, since I can't tell much by the stock photos. Thanks!

If those two coins were shown to me by a bum on the street, I'd consider buying them both. But on ebay, I'd just look, laugh and go back to watching TV. Sorry but I want to see a coin in person before buying.

After looking around a bit I found similar wood grained 1909S graded coins on Teletrade and Heritage for the same amount, so I think I may go route, and crack the coin out. I'll just have to be patient.

Why don't you just go to a local dealer or show and find one in person? This is just too important (and expensive) a coin to buy without seeing it in hand.

How much variation is there in the placement of the mint marks on 1909 cents? I looked at a lot of other pictures and the mint mark was always under the 0 or a little to the left. Never saw one with it as far to the right as in the first picture above.

There are not many shows here, maybe a few a year , and just one big one which is over. Dealers are kinda far from me, the one the Springs didn't have much of a selection, and the two 'near' work didn't give me that feel good feeling, they were more interested in bullion sales.
