I have been in need of re-pocketing my 2X2's and I can't seem to remember which of these pockets thumb-cut pages were the best. I do know the difference between vinyl (can cause damage over time) and polypropylene (a material that is 100% archival). I know that BCW brand is towards the bottom of the barrel in quality and Guardhouse is nearer the top. I want the ones that won't make your coins fall out. I would like to know what you guys use and why. Thanks in advance.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as the coins have a protective 2x2 separating them from the plastic, I don't think you need to worry about contamination. Also, you will probably never find pages that will keep the 2x2's from falling out if you are constantly moving them around to make room for more coins or to take photos of them. The only pages that I found good for 2x2's are the Eagle Coin Holder 20-place pages. They are slightly deeper so the 2x2's can be easily inserted or removed and they have a protective band of plastic across the center to keep the 2x2's from falling out. The drawback to these pages is that they can become brittle and crack at the binder holes from the weight of the coins. These pages are not cheap! ~ Chris
I use these: https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/supersafe-archival-pages-20-pocket-2x2.html Most 2x2s are not airtight. If they are stored in vinyl pages, there is a real possibility that the PVC could get onto the coin, especially if there is excess heat or humidity. I wouldn't risk it, especially when archival quality pages are a just a few cents more.
Yes, I know they're not airtight, and it is a possibility that heat and humidity can affect them, but I've never had that problem. Living in Southwest Florida, I've always kept my A/C running 24/7. ~ Chris
OK, you're wrong. When the PVC softening agents break down they turn into a gas. And that gas can and will penetrate into 2x2, coin flips, slabs of any kind, and any other coin holder you choose to use. When you are storing your coins you CANNOT have anything that contains soft PVC or vinyl in the same area where your coins are kept. If you do, you risk PVC residue contamination. And just because you can't see that contamination on your coins - that doesn't mean it isn't there !
My father-in-law, even though he was Norwegian always ordered his from this company www.uscoinsupply.com (the homepage is currently under renovation, but the catalogue pages are visible) I have no association with this company, The one pictured is 10 pages, 6 to a page. The coins inside are all either silver, uncirculated or prooflikes and have been in there since the 1970's
