Before the Elizabethan milled coins of 1561, Cellini was using a screw press to make coins for the Pope. Does anyone know of reference works that describe the coins? Are those in fact the earliest coins to be produced with a press as opposed to hammering?
Unfortunatelly in french, here is a description of the invention of pressed coins and milled coins (parts B-1 and B-2) : http://www.inumis.com/europe/articles/moderne/moderne2-fr.html Q Please ask for translation if something stays obscure after reading
