There might have been a thread on this already but I tried searching and found nothing. Can you guys give me some ideas on either a good place to hide your coins, or some affordable methods of security?

With my growing collection I would sure hate to have them stolen one day, you never know what could happen now and days.... And I don't want to take them to the bank, I like to look at them all the time :)

    Thanks in advance guys!

One thing I think you shouldn't get is a safe. I mean look. where would a robber look first for valuebles. In your clothe drawer or in a safe. Just my thoughts

I use the same binders that I use for all my accounting classes. So the binder that says 1A is for Accounting 1A, but the one that says 1P is for Lincoln Proofs.

The bulky stuff--proof sets, etc.--I'm still looking for a better place than where I have them.

Banks have these nifty things called safe deposit boxes.

As the name suggests, they're a pretty safe method of storage for your valuables.

Put your coins into a box and then bury the box in your backyard.

When I first started in this forum, there was a big thread about someone burying their whole collection in their backyard. I never figured out if it was real or not.

i have a few sugestions for you first of if it is going to be out in the open something heavy like a large metal floor safe !!!! anything lite or small will be gone !! second thing you could do is a well concealed area a false wall and or book shelf covering or one of many things !!!Either way can be hard or simple depending on how much value you are trying to protect and the money you are willing to put into this project !!! also a security system in your house will go a long way to protecting your valuables !!

When we got burgled a few years back, they grabbed the laptops downstairs, then headed straight upstairs and into the master bedroom, where they yanked everything out of all the dresser drawers (looking for jewelry). They grabbed a few keepsakes that were on display. They completely missed my childhood coin collection, which was under a pile of blankets.

As far as we can tell they never even entered any of the kids' bedrooms or my "office" (junk accumulation zone).

We've altered our security policies considerably since then, but I'm guessing a cluttered house is generally a good first step for slowing burglars down. On the other hand, if they do spot something like a few valuable coins, it seems like they'd take the time and trouble to start turning the whole place upside down looking for more.

Which would be easier to check and steal? Quickly digging through someone's dresser (trust me, burglars will DEFINITELY check there) that probably has jewelery and valuables, or trying to move and open a 200 lbs safe? Keep in mind that most burglars do not stay around in the house they are robbing very long. They go in, grab what they can, and then get the heck out of there.

Hehe , bad example :) what I have heard people do is build a secret compartment under their closet or basement, I think Thad be the most effective. And put some junk (garbage) on top of it

If you do not collect, then you do not have to worry about them, Right? Think of a place that is out of sight, and hard to get too. A large collection of anything of any amount of real value can be a problem. Sometimes, a bank's safety deposit box or boxes may not be large enough for a collection a of any size and also the cost of them. You have to think outside of the box. A hidden area in you house, that is not obvious to anyone, but you and your close family. Now the problem of hiding it/them and being able to look and feel and enjoy them will be more restrictive too. You balance of your needs will be taxing to make it happen, and make you feel at ease. Good luck to all, that have to find a solution.

Leave them in unmarked binders right on the dining room table, they will never look there! :)

We tore UP my mother's house trying to figure out where she'd put her will, trying to think of all the places she'd think were safe.

We finally found it on the coffee table, where it had been sitting, unnoticed, for probably 10 years.

Quite some years ago, my apartment was robbed. They took all the regular stuff, my jewelry box (all Avon junk) and totally ignored all the beautiful 2x2's of BU coins sitting on the table.

LOL, I've got a neighbor who hides things in PVC pipes stacked along his garage. Who would steal a few feet of PVC?

No idea what's in them, other than he shared his "plan". No idea if it works either, since nobody here gets robbed and most people still leave keys in the car ignition.
