I have a very attractive copper or bronze coin about the size of an American Quarter Dollar. The obverse has a follicley challenged man facing left, the the words "MARTIN*COLE*HARMAN" above the bust and the date 1929 at the bottom. The reverse has LUNDY at the top, HALF PUFFIN, at the bottom with bird ( a puffin I assume), in the center. Here's a link to photos, marked Lundy. http://www.pbase.com/jonysky/mystery_coins Does anyone know the story on this coin? Thanks, JonySky
JonySky,the Lundy coins are very well known to a lot of British Commonwealth coin collectors.Technically, the ones issued in 1929 are illegal coins,as Martin Coles Harman claimed to be 'King of Lundy'.I have got a pair of these coins. There was a proof issue dated 1965,which commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Martin Coles Harman's purchase of Lundy.Martin Coles Harman died in 1954.These coins are listed in Krause's Unusual World Coins, but I can't give you a US$ price on these.Coincraft lists the 1965's at 8 Pounds Sterling each (for the bronze proofs & the nickel-brass proofs),but there are some gold proofs, which are unpriced due to their rarity. Aidan.
Lundy I guess there must be a good story there. I just looked it up in the Britanica set, ( I probably should have done that first), and it has a couple of paragraphs about general info, but not very much about Harman. I think I'm going to try to find out more about him. Thanks for the info. Jony
