Where have all the 1828 Large Date Dimes gone?

I regularly follow major auction and Ebay appearances of key date dimes minted between 1809-1828, for example the 1822, 1809, 1811, (and 1824 pointed 1). These are recognized scarcities, specially the 1822, followed by 1809.

A date which in my experience comes very close, although it does not seems to be anywere near as recognized, is the 1828 dime, specially the 1828 Large Date dime. There are only 2 varieties of the 1828: large date (JR-2) and small date JR-1.

The large date, which is also struck on slightly larger planchet than the small date (due to being struck on open collar dies), seems to be specially difficult to find. A review of the Heritage archives gives the following figures:

    Date ---- Auction apperances

    1809 ---- 51
    1811 ---- 55
    1822 ---- 43
    1828 JR-1 ---- 35
    1828 JR-2 ---- 20

The differences are not dramatic, but are clear enough to indicate that the 1828 Large date is auctioned less often than even recognized scarcities like the 1822.

The 1828 JR-2 has only appeared ONCE per year during the last 2 years. The other dates appear much more frequently. These are interesting facts (if you happen to collect bust dimes like I do). Is the 1828 JR-2 much scarcer than thought?? is it being hoarded?? Whatever the case, I was very happy to be able to buy this one off Ebay 2 years ago (after looking for one for over a year).

I have also attached photos of 1828 JR-1 and JR-2 from Heritage for comparison.

    Thoughts anybody?

I have also noticed this. I recently purchased one (1828 large date dime). PCGS has an estimated population in all grades of less than 200. I'm not sure I believe that, but it does indicate that it is very scarce.

PCGS has 91 1822's, and 54 1828 Large Dates. Only a single Large Date appeared at auction (according to PCGS' records) in 2008 & 2009, and only two in 2010. None at all in 1999. Never have more than 6 appeared in one year, although Heritage sold a second one this year (April & October) which hasn't appeared on PCGS' site yet.

Guessing these are pretty scarce. :)
