hi everyone I was reading on another post about how so many different things can effect your coins , like air conditioning and smoking and so many other things , and it kind of started to worry me because i just use a crappy little 20 dollar safe in my closet that you can pick up with one hand and then i thought i would just ask and see who had some good proven idea's and also has anyone ever used a saftey deposit box and how did it keep after many many years , and i saw some type of gel on ebay i believe it was called silica DEHUMIDIFIER has anyone evr used that and what was the outcome ...

There are Albums, cardboard cases, plastic holders, and SO many different kinds of holders. My dad has a safe with some Mercury's in it and they seem to be doing fine. Get them in an album or some kind of holder.

This is a good website for holders, albums, etc. www.brent-krueger.com

I think a safe with silica packets is a good way too go. And on top of that, a cool dry area without smoke or pollution, or excessive humidity. Thats my stategy anyway.

I keep all of my coins in the top drawer of my dresser. I am working on buying a safe.

Yes, I was thinking it was foolish to say that.

Or maybe his top drawer is rigged with a grenade as a trap.

I use a metal gun safe and silica packets. The gun safe is bolted to the wall of my closet and luckily, the Co. I work for gets in electronic components very regularly so silica is easy to come by.

How much do silica packs help? Has anyone actually measured the difference in the relative humidity of their safe before and after adding the silica?

OK so is the reason you use airtites seems obvious , keeps air out only thing is i really have a hard time opening the airtites does anyone have easy way of opening without damage and would you say that the 2x2's are not so good to keep coins in for long periods of time and the gentlemen who said he used a saftey deposit box if you know do the bank regulate the air ,i'm sure its not the same for all banks ,just wondering about yours experience ..thanks everyone for you reply

Mine are placed in a bowl of lime Jell-O halfway through the cooling process. Then, I carve them out according to size to give them a nice, cushy barrier between the other coins.

    Oh wait, I mean Airtites.

I just want to know, does it have to be lime flavored or does any flavor work. Maybe lime is more cushier than other flavors? Let us know how it works out for ya.

I keep most of my coins in my Whitman Classic Albums. My key dates and other more valuable coins I keep in my safe, of which I have a rabid Doberman chained to.

My dad keeps his in a safe, but I am looking to buy some rolls to start collecting many BU coins that come out in 2007, and the coming years. I like to keep as many as I can in good condition.

I have two boxes that have my coins in them. I am low on storage accessories, so they are still in their original cases from when I collected them, or stuck them in a small baggy.

Actually, they come unassembled in two halves with the ring in one half. After I close them, I rarely if ever reopen them so it hasn't been an issue. But I would think a finger nail carefully slipped under the edge would do it. 2x2's are good for long term storage too. They aren't airtight, but I haven't had any problems with them for circulated coins. The safe deposit boxes are supposed to be slightly more humid than desired, but this must be weighed against the safety factor.
