For those of you with valuable collections, where do you think is the best place to keep your coins? A big safe? Safe deposit box at a bank (what happens if there is a natural disaster like Katrina?)?
I prefer a safe. I looked into a safe deposit box once, but for the large sized ones my bank charges over $200 a year and then $15 every time you want to open it. I pay enough of their fees without this. Guy
Wow, that's outrageous for a safe deposit box. I have a small one and they charge $45 a year with no other fees. I recently bought a home and looked into insurance for my coins, if the collection ever gets bigger. It's tedious because they want the collection listed out to them before they will give that.
If you're an ANA member the insurance firm they use don't require you to itemize every coin unless the coin is worth more than a certain value, which I can't remember right now, otherwise they have you estimate the entire value of your collection and issue a policy based on that amount. I don't have insurance yet but also have been thinking about it.
I currently store my coins in 2 metal foot lockers that I keep in a dark place so they don't heat up. I also have silica gel containers in each of them. The area is not climate controlled so that's my only issue but so far the coins seem to be holding up. Has anyone ever stored their coins in a public storage facility? How did that work out?
Bad idea, too many temperature swings. Coins are small, heck I have about 5,000 in a $75 a year SD box. Not all packaged up or slabbed, but many are in flips. If in a home safe or SD box I recommend silica packs, and if a lot of BU silver some fresh silver uncovered to take the toning "hit".
Mine are kept right here in my home. Guarded by 1 rabid pitbull, 1 ticked off tiger, a cowardly lion, and two good friends of mine. Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson
Even if the storage unit was climate controlled? The reason I'm asking is that eventually I'll be in a position where my collection will be too large for the current space I use. I have all my coins together not just the "valuable" coins. I'd rather keep them all together if I can. I know there would be some inconvenience if I wanted to view my coins plus I would have to pay a rental fee every month. I'm just not sure what other options there are. I can't have a heavy safe as a I live in top floor of a 3 level apartment building. What other recommendations would you all have?
I don't think there'd be a problem with that, as long as it's an indoor storage facility with 24/7 climate controlled units. My only concern then would be how safe the unite are and who has access to them. Guy
I know it sucks but putting truly valuable coins in a SD box is a reasonable precaution. I know we all like to have them near us, but be honest. If you have that many coins you do not look at most of them. Put them somewhere safe, you can always get them later. You can bet I am not keeping my collection of Bust and SL halves, 1795 dollar, bullion, etc in my house, especially when I haven't looked at them in probably 10 years. I am too much a collector to wish to sell them, but I have no desire to look at them either at this point of my collecting. I have moved my bullion closer to where I live, though, in case the market completely goes nuts I could sell quicker.
I used to keep some favorites in a safe at home and the more valuable things in a safe deposit box. Now with the Internet, I have moved it all to the cloud so I can access it anywhere I have an Internet connection.
Ummm....I've always been leary of the "cloud" myself, doesn't feel secure. Never thought of it as a place to store coins. Hope your jesting.
I keep mine where nobody would ever think. It's for that reason that I don't tell anyone. It's a secret place. Besides, you know how easy it would be for someone, (a criminal type) to put together a name with an address? I don't want no part of it.
Guy , that's a ripoff , alot of banks will give you a free box if you have a checking account and instant deposits of your paycheck .
In 1998, I had the Golden opportunity to buy a closed Wells Fargo Bank building built in 1951. Nothing like have a 12' x 8' bank vault with 2ft poured concrete & rebar walls & 3000 lb steel valut door.
I'd find a different bank for my accounts. My bank (BoA) charges $35 a year for their largest SDB, and I can access any time I want without charge. Chris

I pay enough of their fees without this. *********************************************************************************************************************************** I have two 5"x8" x standard length safe deposit boxes and pay $75.00 total per year for both of them. The bank holding my mortgage was bought out by Wells Fargo which entitled me to a free standard size SD box at the bank. I already have a standard size box at another bank so I rented a 5"x8" for $75.00 instead of the going rate of >$90.00. I'm renting a 5"x8" SD box at the bank where I conduct my daily banking. One of the bank officers approached me stating he was reveiwing my accounts and determined I was eligible for a free 5"x8" box. If I needed another box I'd check around with the local banks and go with the best deal. Banking fees: I don't pay any. none for any bank service.
