Where do you draw the "nice coin" line?

On graded/slabbed coins, where do you generally put the line between "ok coin" and "nice coin"? MS 60? MS 66? I'm talking about intended for circulation business strikes, not proofs or other NIFC coins. Is it different for each coin?

I don't have a line. Each coin stands on it's own.

IMHO, you can miss nice coins by drawing such a line.

No lines, just standards set for what I am looking for. Otherwise, you'll miss out.

Shoot......'58's can be most beautiful. It's all in the eye of the beholder. :)

I'll drool over a VG10 Chain cent, but a VG wheat cent is pretty meh to me. It all depends.

My imaginary line is eye appeal.....grades on a slab don't mean a lot to me.....after all I'm buying the coin for me not any one else.
More and more I read in here about grade over eye appeal.
I strive for xf or better but that's what I set the bar at for coins I would like to obtain for my collection . I have passed on extremely rare variety coins due to condition or damage.
For others finding such a rare variety or a coin in AG grade
would fill their needs or desires .
I don't take much stock in what's is written on a slab my eyes tell me all I need to know.
As long as I see what appeals to me I'm good.

Each coin needs to be considered on its own merits. Grades can help, but they are not the end all, be all.

Here's what I'll say. TPG grades aren't always accurate (look at my recent 1877 IHC thread and you'll know).

Also, it depends on the coin. I would drool over a VF-20 1863-S quarter eagle but not a VF-20 1986 cent.

Overall, I don't draw a line at all. Heck, I have a slight fascination with lowballs.

One that's coming in the mail. Find me a more worn and undamaged 1859-S half and I'll be amazed.

Yes very much so. Aside from the obvious that different coins have different levels of eye appeal, strike quality and just quality in general can vary wildly from date to date when you are talking about the entirety of coins. Then you get into the fact that many AU 58s are really MS 63/64ish or better with a touch of rub somewhere and often better then many of the MS 60-62 coins and such lines get even more complex

My most recent purchase is an 89-CC Morgan in VG10. It's a nice coin, very wholesome and eye-appealing. Any other mint and I wouldn't conpider it nice. Likewise if it were VF and not attractive. A coin's "niceness" is not tied solely to its grade.

There is an entire thread of AU58s. The coins there are outstanding.

I agree, a nice coin has more to do with its overall appearance than it does just the grade. The coin in my avatar is fairly worn, but I still think it is a nice coin. On the other hand when I am looking for Peace Dollars to add to my collection I will pass over several coins that may have the grade I am looking for, but don't have the right look for me. For me at least that's how I draw the line for what a nice coin is.

I draw the line at eye appeal regardless of the grade.

I try to stay away from the super high slabbed MS grades for my collection because I think they add minimum eye appeal for a disproportionately huge premium in most cases. Other than that if I like the coin and have the money I'll buy it.
