Hey guys, I am looking for 2 eight reales coins: 1) a carolus IIII bust 1795 or earlier 2) a pillar style eight reales I already have a carolus III so I am good on that variety. I want them to be mexico mint. I dont care if they are slightly damaged or even cleaned is fine with me, as i like to be able to hold them in my hand. I just like decent eye appeal and not worn all to crap. Seems like the ones on ebay are either overpriced, or will probably end up being fake. I would buy off ebay if you guys can recommend some good reputable dealer for eight reales coins, if so please give me any names so i can add them to favorite sellers and keep an eye out. Or does anyone know a coin dealer with a web page I can look at for these coins? edited
Might not be the dates you want and a bit pricey but they are genuine and one of the best to buy from regarding these. http://www.sedwickcoins.com/milled_misc_silver.htm Its where I got my 1788 AU53 8 reales.
Check out the monthly "World Coin News." Bound to be a number of Pillar dollars for sale by major dealers. Message me privately and I will email you a good image of a fake, and that should be useful information down the line. Also, nearly every coin show has free samples of WCN too. http://www.amazon.com/World-Coin-News-1-year/dp/B000066T15
Great advice Doug, but I have noticed these are pretty scarce nowadays. Used to be every issue of WCN would have 8-10 for sale at least, now its tough to find one. I like these so just like keeping an eye on them. Next time I see John Ferm, (a dealer in WCN who lives a few miles from me), I will ask him about these, and their general availability nowadays.
See if you can't find what you want here - http://search2.vcoins.com/results.aspx?suid=389de18b-daa2-4ef1-884a-72657cc0e00b
Nice search Doug. Still, only 5 show up on probably the largest website of dealers. Time was every dealer and his brother had one of these for sale. They just seemed to have slowly been soaked up by the market, and just aren't as available as they once were. Sure, if you want a chinese imitation they are easy enough to get though.
And they still do have them, the coins are not hard to find. Any reputable dealer in world coins can get these pretty easily. But that does not mean they will keep them just sitting around in inventory. That's why so important to use those things called Want Lists.
Yeah, I know, but you know what I mean man. Go to an old coin show with 50 tables and you would see 200 of these for sale. Heck, in the 80's they had magazine ads selling these off as "America's first silver dollars" and you got 5 of them in plastic for like $250 or something. They were almost as common as Morgans, and now you actually have to pursue them some to be able to find one you like. I think maybe my age or number of decades in this hobby is showing.
I know Chris, I collected my first Pillar dollar in 1976. And even at the Fun show, this year, there were plenty of these coins to be found. I've never been to a coin show, even the small ones, that didn't have a good selection of them.
Hmm, weird. None of the shows in MN or IL has a large selection of these that I see. In a small show of 30 tables there may be 2 for sale if you are lucky. Maybe they are simply more available in the south. IDK. 1976 huh? Yeah, you beat me. Of course, I was 7 at the time.
Gotta remember Chris I lived in Salt Lake until 2009. That's the shows where I used to see them. But in '76 I lived in Fla.
