I got $100 in nickels last week. It was my first search ever, and honestly it's just not my thing. I was wondering where I can go to dump these. But since I will no longer be doing this I don't want to open up an account at TD Bank or anything. Just looking for somewheres to dump my nickels that doesn't require them rolled, charge fees, and I don't need to open an account.
You can dump it into my checking account. Seriously, do you mean you don't bank anywhere? Do you have friends or family who have bank accounts? Anybody with a bank account should be able to cash it off at their bank.
This is the 21st Century. Find somebody who banks somewhere that has a...drumroll...counting machine. Otherwise you're going to be rolling in nickels. Or you can spend them over time.
That's not as easy as it sounds in many parts of the country. AFAIK there is ONE coin machine within 50 miles of me. The closest TD bank is about 2500 miles away. To the OP: Figure out a way to spend them, roll them up, or take the hit at a Coinstar. Rolling $100 in nickels shouldn't take more than 45 minutes.
If you're just trying to get rid of $100 worth, roll them up and see if you can sell a few rolls each to a bunch of different banks, or see if a gas station/restaurant/supermarket/convenience store/whatever wants to buy one or two from you. It may take a little while but there's no reason why you should pay any fees to dump that small of an amount of change just once.
Oh you people and your usurious commercial banks. Get a credit union. Then you are the owner, not some corporate entity in NYC. I have several accounts with several credit unions. They sell me bagged coin, rolled coin, boxed coin and then take it back in coin machines at other branches. I don't even bother searching coins from banks anymore. I find better stuff at my credit unions.
Rolling coins is not that difficult. I get free rolls at many banks. 50 rolls total, roll 10 a day and you're done by the end of the week. Also, some coinstars will wave the fee if you convert to a gift card.
