This tiny straggler appeared in a lot of Satavahana coins I received. I have a tentative attribution for it, but I must admit how much I do not know about ancient coins. Here I must ask for the help of those that know more. The coin has a fairly clear Brahmi legend (considering). It appears to read "Sri Senasa" Senasa might be the name of the ruler. Some preliminary research leads me to believe the coin belongs the Bhodi Dynasty ruling the Andhara region. Yet Bhodi doesn't doesn't strike me as the family name of the dynasty but rather some type of Buddhist honorific title. Similar to the famous Bhodi tree located at Anuradhapura. The coin is without a doubt lead and quite tiny, and shares elements with the coins of the Satavahana, the Western Satraps and fabric with the Chutu. This coin features the railed tree on one side and the 3 arched hill and crescent, which we have seen before on all of these coins. Your thoughts. @THCoins , @Quant.Geek you guys might have seen this before. India, Andhara Bhodi Dynasty 1st century AD(?) Pb Unit 10 mm x .0.75 grams Obverse: 3 Arched Hill with cresencet above - Brahmi legend Sri Senasa (?) Reverse: Railed Bo-Tree Ref:?
Sorry, cant give you the final answer. But i agree with your assertion. It is most likely a Deccan inscribed lead type with a mix of the different dynasties you named. To both sides of the three arched hill seems to be a vertical wigglely line, which usually is single and below the chaitya. I see two clear Brahmi Sa characters, but can't decode the entire inscription. My first guess would be "SiRi SaTaKaNiSa". But is is not a commmon Satavahana type. Looked into Pieper AICR, also don't see a listing there.
I will need to take out my Mitchiner book to identify it. Unfortunately, it is packed away with several other books at the moment. I'll have to dig it out when I get home...Did you check Rapson?
I did- the 1967 version. That's where I came to the Bhodi dynasty conclusion but could not find the name (or like) name king mentioned. there is only a page or two on the dynasty.
sorry AN....i did pick up on the railed bodi tree right away...but i'm going to be about as much help as you would expect me to be here. i'll be watching however.
