Should I insist on insurance and a signature or is that overkill? Best calculated way not to get ripped on postage if including free shipping? How to contend with liars and thieves.

Are you buying or selling? Insurance is always going to be on the seller and it's their choice whether they self insure or purchase but if the package is lost en route that is on the seller not the buyer imo. Signature I generally leave up to the buyer to a certain dollar amount and over that I feel more comfortable with having an item signed for. For shipping using Paypal's multiorder shipping is a good way to go as the delivery confirmation is free versus having to pay for it via the post office and most sellers and buyers just use that as the tracking #.

It depends on whether you're the buyer or seller, and what "valuable " means.
