I focus on die varieties, especially on early clad quarters. For several years I have been trying to amass a complete set of reverse varieties for the '65 - '72 period. Dr. Wiles lists reverse 007 as being relatively common for '69D, but I did not find any despite looking at many hundreds of coins over about three years. I have in my notes "contradictory information" for this coin. Yesterday that changed. My LCS knows I the look for the clads, so when they get a group, they set them aside until I can get a chance to look them over. Yesterday, they had set aside about 30 '69Ds for me to look at. About 8 of them were 007 reverses, and I took three with me. Now all I need is the 008 reverses for the last four years and I will have a complete set. I'm going on 60, so I may run out of time before that happens.
Congrats. I wish I could see some of yours pics so I could learn more from you about the 007, 008 reverses. Yes, I could Google search, but you seem to be passionate about them and pics would make your post come alive.
There is a detailed paper on the clad reverses by James Wiles at this link: http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/content/QuarterRDVHandout.pdf Also, look on-line for discussions by Cladking. Both are excellent resources
Yes, congrats on the find! Same thing has happened to me with some coins that I was looking for. This really proves the point of establishing a relationship with your LCS. If there is anybody who gets their eyes on LOTS of coins, it's them. And thanks for the link.
@quarter-back thanks for sharing those resources. My first real collection was\still is my Washington Quarter Set...BU from 1932 all the way to today. Still working on it. Just recently I tried to get more studious on the series and your link to the white paper by James Wiles is a great resource.
