When do you consider a coin to be yours?

So you've agreed to buy a coin. Maybe by bidding online in an auction. Perhaps online or via the phone with a dealer. Maybe buy-it-now on eBay or ... even a promise to your brother-in-law. o_O

When do act as though the coin is yours? I'm not asking when it's legally yours, but when you think it's OK to act as though it's definitely part of your collection. This can take the form of telling friends, family, or other collectors about it; posting on forums; entering it in a registry; etc. Might even include advertizing it for resale.

Personally, I wait until I've made payment and have received a shipping notice. What do you do?

    See above! :)

I’ve seen quite a few cases of people posting new purchases only to have another person message the seller and “steal” the coin.

If you have some trusted friends, it’s ok to share with them. Otherwise I would wait until the coin is in hand to post it on a public forum.

At one time, I did wait to have it in hand. But I've never had a coin not make it into my hand once I received tracking info. I figure it's no different than a coin I've sent to be graded. It's not under my control, but it's still mine.

When it arrives in my mail box I reach in with excitement I pull it out rush into house and open it and then I hold it has a new born baby.

I touch it and I feel it and then I put into a display cabinet so that I can look at it everyday it's hanging on the wall so I never forget.

I tend to develop a love affair with a coin when I see it. Either in the dealers case.... And far too often in the "For Sale" section here. I have even PM'd members that posted photos of a coin that I HAD to have that they didn't intend to sell! Once I am engrossed, that coin is mine...... In fact, there is a dealer in the midwest that I have been bartering with more than two years over the most spectacular seated dime I ever saw. It may still be in her display case..... But that dime is mine!

Good point. I've sent back very few coins, but I look at it as one I owned then decided to get rid of.

When I see it sitting on my desk and I confirm it is actually the coin I purchased. Too many cases of "what you see is what you get" purchases that result in lower grade replacements "sent by mistake" and four items "lost" in transit so far this year.

Typically when I see that it's been shipped, but when I post it depends on the coin. If it's something I think I might send back or on the flip side if it's a too good to be true purchase, I like to wait until I have it in hand.

I consider it mine when I have paid for it. I do not have to have it in hand yet.

Once it is shipped whether from eBay, an auction house, a private person, whatever. If it's graded then I add the cert# to my list and if the coin were to go missing prior to arrival then I have it documented. In theory it's when I pay for it, but I consider it 'done' when it's shipped. Any shenanigans afterwards are just that.

I can't add it to my collection until it's in my possession. Otherwise, I still have that annoying hole to fill, be it stabbed or not.

I’m in the once I’ve paid for it club. I’ve never had an issue with receiving a coin so that’s always worked well for me.
