I just posted that I found almost a roll a wheat pennies today.
I was wondering is it good to keep wheat pennies?
Also is it good to keep nickels 1959 and earlier?
I have found some and was wondering if their good to keep looking for?
    Thanks,
    SM

I keep all the Wheaty's I come across. Most places will give at least 2 cents each for them. With the nickels I keep higher grade coins and lower mintage coins.

It is very good to keep wheat pennies. It is our numismatic responsibility to save them from being thrown away, run over on the streets, melted, placed on train tracks, and ruined by people with nothing better to do. I also recommend saving the old nickels as those can also be ruined and will be melted by the Feds once they are determined to be too worn for circulation.

Yes I would save them--if you don't collect them give them to a young collector.

Just to say one thing--the Feds don't melt them....they use a machine that rolls them out ( to deface them ) and then they recycle them by a Co. that the mint does not own--there was a article in "Numismatist" (Feb 2005) about this.

I didn't know that. I thought they melted them themselves as they say on their site that when the coins wear out they melt them for new sheets. Guess they didn't include those other steps. I wonder how worn coins have to get before they destroy them...

I keep every wheat I run across. Just cause they are old and are no longer minted. I have even got some fairly nice one's in change.

Well--they don't have to be worn...they showed photos of SAC's that had been rolled and also some state quarters...

Good golly. Well maybe they were damaged??? There should be a clear cut reason as to why they would ruin them.
