Iam kind of tying this into my last thread about how many different
Series do you collect, Because with the more different things you
Collect the more money you seem to spend, Atleast i know thats
True for me....LOL, I will try and post a poll this time!

So do you have a monthly budget for collecting??

  3. Zilch. I only get to buy a new addition maybe three times a year. Three times if I'm lucky! I was hoping it would improve in 2010 but once again anything that could have gone wrong, did and things more important then collecting came up :(

After the holidays & the economy & Dr.Bills & perscriptions & inflation it's not going to be a big year on hobby spending for me.

I try to keep it around $1000-$1500, depending on the month. However, I have spent many times that on occasion. How about you, MPC?

I hear that!! I always tie the economy to my own situation and others
I hear from ( But not the man in the white house!! or any other political
Figurine who are out there trying to paint a rosy picture!!) The truth is
Everybody is still hurting just to a different degree!

It really depends on what i sell, But like everything else right know
Things are slow especially after the holidays but i still manage to
Delegate between $500-$700 a month, I look at like a car payment
    That never ends!!!:eating:

I'm relatively "poor" I save up each month what I can, sometimes is 50, sometimes 100, never more than 200 in any given month, then I make my purchases.

I personally do not set a budget...there are many notes that I buy that never get posted here...When I make a significant Large Size or Small Size purchase for that matter, I like to share it with you guys...

My goals are huge and have been told by many well known collectors it is unlikely I will ever realize completion due to lack of material out there in the Grades that I collect in.

My additions can be spontaneous.... as when you find a note you need, grab it now because more than likely another collector is right behind you in most cases if it is a significant note you are after.
Early this morning I was looking at a site and discovered a Large Size Blue Seal I need for the NY Collection..it just happens to be the highest Graded note at PCGS and between the 2 top TPG it is one of 7 in CHCU and the second finest Graded note known.

I will wait till they open on Monday and call, buy the note and then when I receive it, hopefully share it with you all.

I have one note in my collection that I am still paying for..and will pay off with in the next 45 days...it is by far the Top Note in my collection of Large Size...when I hold the 44 Large Size Notes in my hands it makes my mind reel in contemplation of what and where they were and how on Earth they ever made it to me. May God grant me the right to preserve and protect a part of History until the next in line (my son AJ) comes into his own and hopefully continues.

So think about it..when you see a note you really need, can you afford to wait? Or do you simply react to the situation at hand and acquire the piece?

Another question that would be good is; Whats in your Numismatic Library..I currently have 16 Books on Notes from the United States, SPMC Membership, PCGS and PMG Memberships and a Banknote Reporter Subscription that I read through daily.

I've given myself an allowance of $20 per week for collecting purposes, which works great right now, considering the series I collect have some high grade examples in my price range each week. Now I'm saving it up though, so that I can get a more expensive piece at a coin show in March :)

I try to pull 20-40 a week aside out of my check, and whatever I make doing side work..which usually isn't alot..sometimes I have to save a couple months for a coin I want, .but for my collection this is usually good enough.
sorry didn't see this was in papermoney section before I posted

It really depends on how much I spend every month. I buy and sell a lot on eBay so all of the profit goes straight into my coin collection. I keep a very organized excel spread sheet with of the coins I have sold and the what I made or lost on the coin. Once a month I take money out of my paypal account and put back into my savings account. Everything in my paypal account is only for my coins and the wifey doesn't say anything about what I spend with it.

Meh, right now whatever I can pilfer out of pocket change....I haven't even made it to my first coin show yet....there's not really a local shop near me that I know of, though I'm sure there are a ton in Atlanta.

I don't really have a budget for coin purchases. But, I know when I've spent too much one month so I quite for a month or two. It can happen where I find something that is just exactly what I'm looking for after I have already recently made a prior purchase.

Hmm, when I first started collecting it was an unmonitored spending spree...then I tapered off. The budget isn't set in stone...but I'd say anywhere between $25 and $75 a month on average.

I buy about 1 nice piece a year. Every year "nice" costs more and has more thought put into it. Every once in awhile, when I get an itch, I'll snoop around for some inexpensive foreign notes and drop a $20 or $50. Also, an accasional bookstore gift cetificate goes towards...books.

Don't really have a budget, though if I see something I really like I can come up with a couple hundred $$$. Sucks...missed out on a great buy of a super rare $5 national on eBay last month because I couldn't afford to bid more than $500. Would have had the nicest known of 3. :(

Actually, I have no budget yet established and am in the process of negotiating with my wife on that. I think with her there is a mental threshold of $100/month. I don't want to give her sticker shock on this re kindled hobby of mine. Also, since I am still in a learning mode, I don't want to make big purchases yet. I figure if I screw up a $100 purchase it's not the end of a world. The test will be when I go after the 09 S VDB, 09 S, 14 D and 31 S with my Lincolns. Slowly I am filling the easier holes in my various ets, but will soon get to the "keys wall".

Hi ever one ,I hope I'm wrong but from my reading all of these posts it's going to be a difficult year ahead for all of us financially,I don't know ,I'm not a dealer but this may cause either dealers sitting on their stock if they can or lower prices for the collector who doesn't have the amount of hobby money they were use to spending monthly. This is bad for dealers & buyers .Is the glass half full or half empty ? I'm buying but much less and paying bills like all of us first.
