I got this 1912 Barber Half a few days ago it was in a 2x2 when I got it. I took it out to get some good pic, and when I did I noticed these dark spots along the edge. Any ideal what it could be or what caused it? Thanks for looking.

My guess is album toning from an old album or coin folder.

Especially the old Whitman folders are notorious for toning the rims, since that is the surface of the coin which came in closest contact with the album/folder.

Does that affect the value or grade?

For that particular coin, probably not.

I agree with RaceBannon DJ. I have some old silver that has the same marks as yours, and they came out of a Whitman folder.
