Looks like some one hit it with some gray spray paint.

If anything, someone hit a grey coin with copper colored paint; look at "Liberty". No way grey painted, would have to be the other way around. Also the odd copper streak/drip down the face makes it clear the copper color is on top of the grey.

Also, the first idea of a sort of wear doesn't look possible, as there are no abrasions and the devices are remarkably clean. You'd have to go at it pretty hard to remove a normal copper layer and there's no evidence of the necessary damage on the devices, exactly where the color would have to have been rubbed off. Also, copper layer looks overall thin and not present at all in spots.

So I think it is in the realm of possibility that this is actually a mint error. Anyone else?

too much heat and a copper/zinc penny will just melt into a round blob of gray colored zinc.

Don't know, could it be incomplete copper plating?

Meow has found a handful of these CRH, and has shared them in the forums in the past. Meow was told they where not anything notable, just a heat damaged coin. But it does look natural to Meow, but all have said it was nothing; but it sure seems like something.

Incomplete copper plating would be my quess also. And since the blanks are not plated at the Mint it can't be called a mint error. Just defective plating.
It is a nice example in MS condition. I would keep one as an example.
