What's up with this penny?

    A cashier at work found this 1976D penny in a roll today. It's the same color as a dime. Anybody know anything about it? I'm thinking it was some bicentennial promotion. I don't know. IMG_1647.JPG IMG_1646.JPG

    Perhaps a high school science project? I think I recall having to do something like that--decades before the turn of the century.

    I agree, it does look plated.

    You can heat these just right to get a silverish color as the zinc/tin melts.

    I agree with Thad, you can still see brown copper color here and there. I think it's just toned, not plated.

    That's just the picture. There is no copper showing. It's all shiny silver colored.

    The same cashier found a 1984 penny the other day the same as the last one.

    Very likely PMD. Does it weigh the same? If it happened to be nickel, weighing would not help.
