First I thought it was just dirt. Then I polished it with Brasso really hard in ONE LITTLE SPOT just to be sure and nothing came off except some brown stuff. If it was dirt or tarnished it should of come off and shown the real color of the nickle. What do you think it is.Thanks B12

Modern objects and coins might be made of CUPRONIKKEL. Nikkel is a very hard material. In some aspects it is like precious metals, they hardly ever corrode. If they are stained, there are several things you may try.
Clean with a lint free cloth that is soaked in Ammonia.
Clean in a solution of 30:1 Spirits and Sulphuric Acid, remember, add the Acid to the Spirits, NOT the other way around..
Remove the stains by rubbing with Stearin Oil.
Rust like spots may be removed with a peace of bacon, simply run the object with the bacon. Afterwards rub ith Ammonia.

The nickle is a metal detector find, I have seen hundreds of them that look exactly like that one !!

Why go through all the trouble to clean it ?

1976 whatever the mint mark is is hardly a rare coin.
