Found this in my box of dimes today. I almost pitched it until I realized it wasn't a big scratch. What is it? And is it worth keeping?
He looks like on of the Xrays you see when someone has a nail through their skull except his looks like a spear going through his head.
That's what I was thinking. I doubt there are a large number of them out there because the obverse die probably fell apart fairly quickly.
Nice, again! I noticed Mikes has a dent of some sort on the rim, about 3-4 o'clock. Someone's gotta submit it and see what it comes back as. Edit: As a matter of fact, why don't any of you submit it to minterrors.com for an article on the discovery? Here is the link http://minterrornews.com/submit.html , read it.
MAJOR die crack! (Not die break. A die BREAK is when a piece of the die breaks off and falls away from the rest of the die.)
Woah! Die imperfections are not really my cup of tea, but I must say, that is a very nice looking die crack compared to other examples on Roosevelt Dimes that I have previously seen. Fantastic circulation find!
Conder101, it is a die break (sorry to bust the bubble). Remember that the raised areas on the coin (the crack) is lifted off the fields and the portrait of the coin (dime in question). When a piece of the die falls off, the missing piece/s on the die show on the coin as a "lifted" area (making it a die break). If you look at a die, the portrait on a die is in the die, showing on the coin as "raised".
Here's what Webster says: Die Break: a defect or blemish on a coin or medal caused by a crack in the die
