Why are the 2004 Peace medal nickels soooo darned expensive!?! I managed to get my set of P and Ds when they first came out and were fairly inexpensive. But now I'm trying to get a set for my grandmother who also collects, and they are really expensive!! On Ebay, the cheapest that I can find a P&D roll set is $21!! Ive seen them going for more than $100!! Its outrageous!
Ya know..there are some folks on this fourm that will have a better answer than I but for my two cents worth..here goes! I am under the impression that since the Peace Medal and Keel Boat versions were a one time strike sort of like a commerative and will not be struck again. Therefore the numbers minted are just that. No more, No less, good examples are expensive, unsearched mint rolls will be even more expensive. Supply and Demand in economics 101...he who has the goods can set the market! I have two mint rolls of each in my safe..I hope they will be there for a long time coming, if anyone can provide additional information I would be happy to read and appreciate it....good hunting.
I understand your basic idea, but there were more Peace Medal nickels minted than there were Keelboats, and the Keelboats are a lot cheaper. This is what baffels me!
Peace "P" mints are getting a premium, supposedly due to lower mintage. My shop has them for $14.95 a roll. Ebay gets that at a minimum, plus several dollars shipping. The others, Peace "D", and Keelboat "P" and "D", are going for $4 a roll, at my local shop.
Don't forget, the "supply" part of supply and demand, is tied more to availability than population. Up until a couple months ago, you could still get the P&D keelboat nickel roll sets from the US Mint for $8.95+ S/H. Collectors and dealers saw what was happening with the peace nickel after it "sold out" from the Mint, and stocked up on the Keelboats, increasing the available supply.
