Many of us will have some form of reson for choosing their avatar. Here is mine:- I have a real soft spot for the eastern denarii of Septimius Severus. I bought a nicely struck example in good condition and thought it worth an experiment. I am not an artist but had a bit of a mess about with photoshop and then with a bit of cropping... What is your avatar story?
just my favorite world coin period. and rare in higher grades too. it reminds me of the lion in the MGM titles in the movies. strong and majestic.
My first coin forum avatar, and the one I used on CoinTalk for a while, was this: It the reverse of an 1829 Capped Bust Half Dime. It was the only coin of that denomination in a large hoard (accumulation) of mostly US coins collected by my grandfather. I thought its basal state was interesting and it looks like a full moon. Less than a year after catching coin fever while sorting my grandfather's hoard, I completely jumped ship to ancients. Eventually, after being repeatedly asked why I was using a featureless blob as an avatar, I changed it to my finest coin-- this tetradrachm of Agathokles:
An ex-girlfriend got this coin (an as of Marcus Aurelius) for me while she was in Spain. When I joined CoinTalk, it was the only coin image I had on my computer. I've always felt that everyone knows me by my avatar so I've never changed it. My god, have I really been on here for over seven years?
First thing I collected when I got back into coins around 2006 was Kennedy Proofs in TPG Ultra Cameo 69. This 1983 coin was cool, as it was very golden toned over entire obverse. I liked the look and decided it was appropriate based on my collecting goals. It would make more sense If it was 1980, my birthyear, but my 1980 example didn't have any special "look" to it. I completed that Kennedy set, got bored with having ~100 coins all looks the same, so I sold it as a set and used that money as seed money for my new CAC approved Type set. I briefly changed my avatar, but even I couldn't recognize the new image, so I switched back and now my posts stand out nicely and I can find myself quickly. I don't think I'll ever change it, as you wouldn't know who I was!
The Rage Comics/Stick Figure Memes are the first thing I read every morning and the "Sir" figure fits a coin collector well. Its holding one of my empress coins that I can change whenever I want. I change avatars often.
My ex took this pic in Newport, R. I. while I was boating in the harbor and it's funny you should mention a story. While I was trying to do a close up of Rose Island, I grounded the boat on the rocks getting to close. Good thing Harbor Patrol was on lunch. My son jumped out, pushed us off and we were all set to go again. Very embarrassing. ( And I am blocking the sun off the water).
cool topic MED. my current avatar is this german notgeld coins obverse.. just kind of a weird guy , like me. he got his head chopped off, hope i don't have that in common with him.
I've told this story before, but when I was very young (12 or 13 years old) I was a member of an acting troupe called Restoration Arts Theater. We most generally put on Shakespearean plays. And while I had other roles, my favorite and most memorable role was that of Mark Anthony in the Tragedy of Julius Caesar. I even named one of my sons Mark Anthony.
Mine is one of the favorite coins I have, a MS63 St Gaudens. Nothing really special about it, but I like it!
Normally I've had something late Roman or post-Roman Germanic from my collection as my avatar since those are my two main focuses in collecting, but my new favorite coin is my Abbasid dirham of Caliph Al-Mansur, a recent acquisition. Its very nice in hand and as someone that doesn't normally collect Islamic but wants to expand some more into that field, is quite an interesting coin to me. But I still have something Romano-Germanic from one of my other coins as my quote under my avatar (D N THEODAHATHVS REX: "Our lord, King Theodahad").
Although I mostly collect ancients (mainly roman as some of you may know), I liked the idea of an avatar symbolising the strong link, story and love USA and France have had together for a long time. What more than "la statue de la Liberté" on a french 100 francs (the proof version in gold) could represent that ? Q
I'd been wanting to get this pattern J-1671 for a few years to go with my proof Liberty nickel set and when I finally got it, it became my avatar.
