Asked for some sackies today at the bank and got these from the genius bank teller. Mint mark looked like an unreadable blob until I scanned this. Now is sorta looks like an "S". So I guess this is a proof coin from the first year these fugly coins were made? And I'm assuming it's too scuffed up to be worth anything, correct? Also isn't there a type 1 and type 2 SBA proof? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks again guys!
mostly by how it looks. A proof would have reflective fields and likely beautifully frosted devices, nice square topped rims and excellent eye appeal. It's actually pretty easy to do, even with impaired/circulated proofs.
A Proof would have a mirror finish with frosted devices and no visible scratches or marks, unless it had been in circulation for a long time and had a good bit of wear ,then it would be impossible to tell it was ever a proof
1979-S were minted both circulation and proof sets. Check here: http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dollars/anthony_dollars/1979s_one_dollar.htm Mintmark Location: "S" (for San Francisco, CA) on the left side of the obverse, just above Anthony's shoulder
Yes there is. There are also two varieties for the business strikes as well - wide rim/narrow rim. This one appears to be narrow rim.
Hi, The variety on the proof versions have to do with the mintmarks. Either a clear S or a filled S. Type 1 proof is the "filled" S Type 2 proof is a clear S which is scarce. Have Fun, Bill
Let Her Go Your SBA dollar is and most likely will never be worth more then a dollar. I collected hundreds before I realized that only MS65 and better grades would be worth much more then a dollar. The wide rim or narrow date 1979 SBA is a real rarity that it would bring 16+ dollars if it is in MS 65 or better. I got to where i like spending them now along with Sacagaweas.
Might have been, past tense, a proof at one time. Due to numerous robberies of coin collections where the idiot robbers just spend the coins as regular coins, there are lots of proofs in circulation. I have found several over the years but all were so badly messed up not worth anything.
Once a Proof - always a Proof, even if you beat it with a sledge hammer. That part never changes. Proof is not a grade - it is a method of manufacture. But this coin is not a Proof.
All of the circulation 79-S SBA's have blob S mintmarks. Yes with enough wear a circulated proof coin can lose enough of the Proof charactistics that it can no longer be identified as a proof. They usually reach that point somewhere around VG or Fine. This coin is nowhere near that worn and it does not have proof characteristics. It is a business strike.
