(Title joke for all you Seinfeld fans out there) Pulled this 1964 D Washington Quarter out of a tube I save my better looking examples in. Thought I would get around to imaging it so I could share - but also to ask what's up with the finish on it? It sticks out like a sore thumb - almost a satin/matte finish. It's extremely obvious on the obverse, a little less so on the reverse due to the golden toning...but I thought I'd put it to the forum - what do you think? (What's piqued my curiosity is a recent article I read about the SMS 1964 sets that have turned up. Now, I'm not insinuating that this coin is one of those - most likely it's not - but it looks SO different compared to all my other Washington quarters I thought I'd at least ask.) Enjoy!
Thing is.....weren't all SMS sets produced at San Fran? Lovely coin. You should send it to me for attribution......
I believe so, so the D mintmark perhaps kills the SMS strike - but I don't know if I've seen a 64 D that looks like this one does...so I thought I'd get some opinions.
Looks frosty. You are talking like you think it's an ugly duckling (sticks out like a sore thumb). I'm sure there are plenty of collectors here who might stand in line for it.
/raises hand Another consideration is, the coin could have been dipped past the point of recovery. I won't call it such based on one set of images, but "matte" or "satin" are terms you might use for what you saw if you had an overdipped coin in hand.
@robec - Allow me to say that the coin is like a Cinnabon (before they changed their icing to the current nasty whatever-it-is goop.) I, like Heavy D before me, got nothin' but love for it, baby. Just trying to figure out why it looks smooth and silky. @SuperDave - I'll have the soup. Having seen plenty of over-dipped and lifeless coins, this is not one of them. So that's out.
Well, let's just say that scratch through the head is the only thing keeping me from making this one disappear off your site the moment it appears.
