what is on them 5 of them has a slight yellowish coating and the back of 4 of them has the thick purplish "tarnish" any ideas
no actually underneath incan under the cabinet lights..I'll redo the pics tomorrow outside if its nice outside
There are quite a few carbon spots on those. Comes from breathing on your coins while looking at them among other things.
And that's exactly what it is - tarnish, better known as toning. But looking at those I wouldn't worry about it much. The coins look to have been harshly cleaned so they are only worth melt value.
Looks like the 2000 was handled poorly when I see the scratches at 2 o'clock in the first photo. The spots probably came from this handling.
slightly better pics. click the link then maximize the window then click the image for full size. Again the reverse has a purpleish heavy tarnish some more than others,,but the obverse i have no idea what it is, i'll probably keep em the 4 or 5 that are like that, silver is silver.
hemi - you DO know what it is, it is toning. or as you say in your own words - tarnish. That's what tarnish is - toning. All tarnish is toning, and all toning is tarnish. The two words mean exactly the same thing.
