I have a handful of small African coins that I can not figure out which country they are from. The coins are very small so the picture isn't too much help, but the names I can't figure out are: AFRIKA DZONGA, AFRIKA TSHIPEMBE, AFERIKA BORWA, ISEWULA AFRIKA. the photo is at this site: http://www.pbase.com/jonysky/mystery_coins labeled Africa coins. I would be grateful for any input from the board. JonySky
JonySky,these coins are from South Africa, which is a British Commonwealth country.Since 1996,the South African Reserve Bank decided to do away with inscribing the South African coins solely in English & Afrikaans. It was decided to reflect the multicultural mix of South Africa's population by inscribing the coins of South Africa in the native languages,in addition to English & Afrikaans. This is designed to show that South Africa had moved on from its apartheid roots. If you want to talk to me about South African coins & notes, you can send me a private message or an email.South Africa's currency is called the Rand, which is divided into 100 Cents. The plural for Rand is the same as in the singular. The currency symbol for the Rand is 'R',placed in the same position as the $ sign. Aidan.
Thanks. I do appreciate that information. Seems like a good idea, unless you are a collector without a clue. The African countries are very difficult to organize. So many have changed the names and political idenity. And with so many colonizers in the same areas, showing the development of the countries through their money is as hard as the NY Times crossword puzzle. Jony
