This quarter just looks odd to me. Is that a clashed die on the obverse in front of his face? The planchet looks strange. The rim looks strange. The "P" and "IN COD WE TRUST" also look strange. Any thoughts?
I think you're seeing the result of a die so old, and so worn, that it no longer fits to tolerance in its' allotted space in the system. Collar clash at 9:00 obverse and a little rotated from that on the reverse (is the reverse rotated a bit?). Loose in the collar, loose for height from reference due to wear, making MD more likely, wicked wear striations in the fields. Not entirely sure what the line in front of the profile is, there's no reverse feature to cause it in a clash.
Thanks for the info Dave. Unfortunately, that makes sense. There goes my fame for finding a sweet DDO.
The gash was in the planchet prior to being minted. The die is worn and has much debris on it at the time. No --- Not DDO!! I like the pic! Good job. You can watch the flow of the metal as it was pressed. Is that a rough cleaning of the old die?? Rick
Wow! That's about the worst die wear I have ever seen on a quarter. I know there are VLDS coins, but this looks worse. Is there a VVLDS designation? If so this one qualifies.
I love those really late die state Washington Quarters. You don't see that kind of metal flow on the silver ones, only the Clad ones. It's because the metal is much harder and does not flow as easily as silver.
