What's going on here?

    Hello,

    I'm not sure of what's causing the hollowing or smashing in of the date. Is it die deterioration? What's causing this to happen? Please let me know, I appreciate it!

    If that's a Lincoln cent; there is a known double die for 1917. I have always had a hard time to ID those. Not saying you have one there.
