OK, I'm missing something here. Asking "why" about ebay prices has a given amount of uncertainty, but just the same, why are 2004 mint and proof sets going for so much already, where the silver sets have not changed much in value? Is this soley based on availablility from the US Mint?
hmmmmmmm, i was gonna say the proof SACs but both have them, or it might be that more people bought silver sets then regular and they r easier to get, either that or the Mint workers snuck about 100,000 sets in their pockets and ran far far away
It is not uncommon for some people to pay more for something that it is really worth. But with something like Proof sets - it's usually because they don't know any better. A couple of weeks ago there was info floating around that because the mintage was low last year that the '04 sets would shoot up in value. So some folks think they are cashing in. But they are actually cashing out
Thanks GD, that seems to coincide with the recent jump. Spider....too funny. Let me know if you find their hoard
The mint and regular proof sets were pulled from sale long before the ordering period usually ends. Typically when a new coin is sold by the mint they will totally satiate the demand so there is only a little new demand after they aren't available anymore. Those who purchased tend to hold for either long periods or much higher prices so the coins will merely trickle back onto the secondary market unless there is a large price increase. Since sales ended early the demand was not filled and the would-be buyers are pushing the price upward. While the price will probably eventually match the prices of similar sets don't count on them coming down or this happening soon.
