The dangers of PVC have been known for decades. Google PVC and "coin storage" and you should find countless sites with detailed explanations.

PVC leeches chemicals over time. this chemical when it comes in contact with either coins or paper currency will tone the coins and yellow the paper. I do not want to pretend to know it all about the use of PVC, but i would stay far away from it. If you are using PVC holders now, cut your loses and switch to a new safe holder before your coins turn. As a note, there are collectors who have used PVC holders for years and have never had a problem. But IMHO they are just plain lucky!

Used them for years without problems?
    They are the lucky ones.

PVC damage is a pain, and very common. (and really hard to remove, esp. on copper coins.)
Also, note that it is more common with heat.
If you pack your coins tightly they will more likely be subject to the PVC damage.

PVC is some nasty stuff. About two years ago, I bought a collection of coins. Anyhow, every coin in the set was suffering from PVC. The only coins that werent suffering from PVC was a GSA Morgan and 4 rolls of silver quarters. Oh and the Buffalo Nickels and Wheaties were safely stored. But everything else in the set was covered with PVC. All the rest of the coins were in those PVC albums or in Flips. Anyhow, I had a boatload of Mercurys, Roosevelts, Standing Quarters, Washingtons, Franklins, Kennedys, and Silver Eagles all covered with PVC. Luckily I got the set and took care of the problem before any damage happened. Nasty Stuff though. And I agree, you should cut your losses and get a new storage system.

I rather think they just don't KNOW they have a problem.

that is possible GD, i just didnt want to throw out the comment that PVC was bad, and then get blasted by some collectors who have used it and never had an issue.
