...it is the Chief of Indian heads. I found while metal detecting. What are the odds of that? I know it has corrosion and all but it still should be worth a little bit of moola. Any opinions are welcome. I have some other nicer date indians that I have found also. A real nice 1872 for being in the ground for 100 or more years. If ya wanna see some of em let me know and I'll post em and you guys can give me your opinion on grade and soforth. I know the grade is lowered because of them being in the ground but its still fun to find em. Here are the photos. Front and back of coin. Or shall I say, obverse and reverse. Jim
Dang -- an 1877, even. I don't care about the condition -- that you even found it was totally cool. It looks authentic, with the shape of the final '7' and the shallow "N" on the reverse. Still, I'd definitely get it authenticated. There are some coins you *always* need to get authenticated, and the 1877 cent is one of them. Given the problems, you'd need to use ANACS since they'll net grade and authenticate coins NGC and PCGS will send back in body bags. If it's authentic, it's still worth at least a couple hundred bucks in this condition, maybe a little more. Based on these pictures, I'd net grade it between Fair and AG. I love looking over Indians. I'm really close to finishing my own XF/AU set of them (I'm currently looking for a nice 1877, selling some other coins to raise the money).
HI Ziggy, You want me to send ya pic of a 1866 and 1872 indian I found in the same hole. They are in great shape for being in the ground. Full liberty and everything. Jim
