What would you grade this 1921-D Walking Liberty?

Raw ungraded by a TPG. I think the 3 rim nicks on the Obv are probably average for this year and the amount of wear it has seen.

But it filled the last empty hole in my circulated set ;)

I like the strong full 1921 date.

I agree with budgood, VG-10. I have seen many 21-Ds that people have marked VG on the holder that really aren't VG coins. The problem is usually that the rims are close but are not actually complete. On your coin the rims are unquestionably complete.

I'd call this coin a desirable VG and worth a premium over an average VG-8 coin.

I agree with most of what you said except no premium for a cleaned coin.

So the concenus is VG8, cleaned (but not harshly) with rim nicks. Question... if graded, would this end up in a "details" holder?

Should it receive a details grade? Yes. The cleaning is a little to obvious and recent to be given the pass IMO.

What is having so many say this coin has been cleaned? I have several old Walkers that I pulled out of circulation 50 years ago that look like just this, and the only cleaning they ever had was by peoples fingers while the coin was in circulation. I can't see the hairline scratches in the pictures above that indicate cleaning. It seems like any old coin that isn't grimy all over the surface is assumed to be cleaned by so many people.
