I just picked this Morgan up today at one of my favorite Local Coin Shops. What is your opinion on the grade and what would you have paid for it?
I'm thinking about MS64, too, but I wouldn't pay 64 money for it because I don't like the finger print on the reverse at 6 o'clock. That's just me! Chris
Anything you'd ever refer to as a "ding" is always grade limiting. The factors that influence how much are the size, location, and number of hits. This particular one is fairly large, and in a prime focal area, but away from the cheek, where it would be considered more severe. Conversely, the same mark in the hair would be less grade limiting. This particular coin, being nicely struck with few marks other than the one mentioned, and (though it is always hard to tell from a photo) average luster, certainly merits MS64. As others have said, probably $80 or so is a fair retail for it.
Psych...IMHO you are way off...MS62 and a fair price would be around 50. I just got an MS63 in March for 56.50
I disagree David...this coin is much better than 62....the cheek is ok and the surface shows a decent toning....64 all day long.
Thanks everyone. The cheek is actually rather clean. Most of those blemishes are very light bag rubs. Looking at it in hand under magnification it is very clean. I personally could see it in a 64 holder 9 times out of 10. The reverse is one of the cleanest I've seen on a non slabbed Morgan in a long time. I paid $60.00 for her and would not hesitate to do it again.
That is the buy price, sell price is $80. Of course people put in bids or offers like that all the time, they are always outbid or declined. I have put in many bids on coins like that of $40, I was always outbid. Some will say "this coin is worth _ to me" but that is not the coins value if you can't buy them at that.
@buddy16cat I did not buy this on eBay. It was purchased from a local coin shop. I was able to examine the coin in hand. They did have a beautiful 1879 PL that they were asking less money for. But looking at it, it had some hairlines that looked like a pretty good wipe. I regretfully had to pass it up. They were asking $65.00 on the Morgan, I was trying to get it for $55.00. The best I was able to do was $60.00, but, I was able to make the deal sweeter for me by bundling it with the XF '31-D Merc and the BU triple punched MM Washington Quarter for 14X face.
"Anything" and "always"? How about when the "ding", which would better be labeled as a "crease", and is part of the design? Please understand that it is not that I take issue with anything you've said in general, but it should be pointed out that this particular, ahem, "ding" well, isn't one.
@jtlee321 Coins lists on Numismedia for $89 at MS64 and generally hard to get a bargain on Morgans due to their popularity. $80 seems like a good price for it.
