Is the date really repunched/doubled or is that toning shadow? I see the adjacent star also shows it. MS-63. Maybe MS-64 on a good PCGS day or a normal ICG day. Jim
I vote MS62. It may be the lighting, but luster looks subdued. Not many major marks, but for that date/mintmark needs more luster to go higher. Reverse looks nicer, but obverse gets heavier weighting.
From the hits and surfaces, it looks as a decent 63-4ish S mint, most notably lack of luster, this is prolly the pic. Dont forget , these are some tough dates to grade, almost all examples show gem traits in one way or another. To slide by as a gem, early S mint your coin has to rock. Take some better pics, let us see some luster and some mirrors...... To be a true 65, 79-80-81 ( S ) mint Morgans have to be all there. And then some. No " CC " bump for these.
I'll agree, from the picture it looks as if the is a re-punched (8) and (O). As for the grade, there are so many things one would have to overlook with these pictures to venture better than a 62 grade. IMHO
That is just the shadow of toning on the date. Imo this is a very tough coin to grade. I think the toning really killed the luster on the obverse, the reverse isn't as bad. The 1880S is usually know for very well struck coins, but this isn't one of them. I'm stuck between AU58 and MS63, but I'm leaning towards MS63.
It is shadowing under the date . But the coin really does have some killer luster , I just can't capture it !! The light cartwheels around this coin amazingly .
80s are hard to grade in person let alone by photos. This is due to fact most 1880s Morgans were stored in vault for a number of years prior their discovery. This one looks like an AU-58. The give away signs to me are what appears as slight wear on the Obverse are the Liberty's Cap, Waves on the lower hair lines. The Reverse's Eagle Breast Features appear to have some slight wear as well as on the very wing tips. This photo does need to be done a little better for any different grade. FYI. All Morgans are VAMs, just some are worth more than others. All known Morgan Dies at the time were cataloged by Van Allen and Mallis and given numbers, including the normal dies. Thus known as VAMs
It's a tough call with these photos, as I previously stated. If the OP would arrange for better pictures, we might be able to get a better consensus. More often than not, I tend to "undergrade" this issue. However, I'm sticking to my 62 grade, nothing better and at least a Au 58/60
